My brother in California used to have a voicemail system
that asked the caller to press the 'pound' key at certain
points in the dialogue. Took me a long time to work out that
it meant the hash key, which is what that symbol was always
called when I lived in the USA in the mid 1970s.

My original formal education in programming at the then
Dundee College of Education was in COMAL, where integer
variables are indicated by a hash symbol at the end of the
variable name - eg. amount#, marks# and so on.

Bit the DM printers we used to get listings were, not
unreasonably, set up for use in the UK, so the program
listings were, to the beginner, all wrong, with amoun£,
marks£ etc
