Quite agree with you Rick but unfortunately we don't have this luxury.

Thanks for your replies Rick and John.

After another intensive search I have found what I need - KeyMapper
that fulfils my requirement perfectly. Written by James Peacock this
small module can be "kept" in Boot (Run-at-startup) and then a simple
Obeyfile can be run to perform a mouse button swap. Another Obeyfile can
be run to reverse the procedure. A very well thought out module that's
fully 32-bit compliant and runs on the Beagleboard. I've emailed James
to thank him.
