I have used the following for many years
Clear[x, aaa, bbb]
SuperStar[x_] := x /. Complex[aaa_, bbb_] -> Complex[aaa, -bbb]
(The SuperStar[x_] translates to x_^*)
No problems. Also, no highlighted asterisk.
