Just in case somebody is working on this branch, and this bug is not
fixed yet:

  Inspecting the timing in the log, I determined the reason for the
  (some?  all?) remaining slowdowns of FAT32: when FATables are read,
  they are read in 512B chunks.  No read-ahead-caching is visible in
  the timing results.  This lead up to 30-min "freezes" during write
  to a filled-up disks (REALLY appearing in my experience) when
  next-free-sector is looked for.
