Right, there was also nothing wrong with the output when the 
example-based code was in use.

VAC4 was the first IBM compiler to notice the fatal error, but it 
compiles without warnings nor errors with all VAC3's. Nevertheless it 
wouldn't hurt to get it right; the example is part of the 
documentation.
