It was multi-posted to all 22 of the groups I'm subscribed to.

Plonking it is useless though, because it's a typical one-time hitter
and you won't see it again unless it nym-shifts in order to spam yet
another fake-information moneymaking scam.

More than that. A single post showing up in long-dead groups was a dead
giveaway. Nuisance.

Usenet usage dropped significantly, resulting in spamming to Usenet no
longer returning even the meager ROI that it got when Usenet had
significantly higher usage. The spammers moved on to using email for
spamming (a higher ROI there, at least before the widespread advent of
SPAM filters).

Unfortunately, a few, desperate (or dumb), spammers, continue to spam
Usenet.

I think one of the reasons Usenet usage has dropped significantly is
that it got flooded with spammers and trolls. Consequently some
newsgroups have disappeared entirely, and others have moved to
mailing-lists using email.

But even e-mail usage seems to be down. Many of the people I used to
communicate with by e-mail have moved to Facebook. I happen to hate
Facebook as an e-mail substitute. And now, it seems among the younger
sets, even Facebook is falling out of favor and they communicate (if you
can call it that) using text messages with their cell phones. I feel
like an aging curmudgeon, but that is because I _am_ old. The kids I
used to know are now parents, and some their children are teaching
school in the very schools where I used to take them when they were
students.

Another reason is because some ISPs do not provide a Usenet service
anymore (though they did not lower their fees when they discontinued
it.) Many use web browsers for such e-mail as they use, it not occurring
to them that there are mail user agents and Usenet user agents.

My theory is that Usenet and e-mail share a quality that makes them
anathema to young users: they're both text only. If you don't offer
flashy graphics... ewww, gross.

> I happen to hate Facebook as an e-mail substitute.

I've never used Facebook and never will. And I wouldn't even know
how to tweet. One of my main objections is that these media are
run by monopolies. So is the phone company, but at least telcos
are a _regulated_ monopoly.

I've been honing my curmudgeonly skills for years. Although I do send
and receive text messages fairly regularly, I do so in an ancient,
arcane language known as English. This set me apart from normal users,
whose idea of communication is rapidly trending toward the electronic
equivalent of grunts around a campfire.

Actually it is the annoying lack of graphics and the need
to employ arcane means, uuencoding and uudecoding, etc to transmit
those simple images. If you use so-called Web-mail then text
enhancemnents as well as images are possible which helps to hide
the paucity of consideration that goes into these missives. Plus
all this requires far less intelligence to use.

Much like my position but i also noted in its early years Facebook was
prone to embarrassing lapses in privacy. They have
never been properly regulated or punished for failures to observe
their own rules. I frequently consider joining Facebook but I have
nothing to sell or crow about. Usenet is the first social media
and still the best because it does not bother with graphics or
with promoting idiocy.

The young may be using it to indicate their presence and
their sense of others present. Speakers of English use it as well
saying Hi! How are you. Fine! and doing well myself. Laters.
There is a term for sort of speech this which presently escapes me.

That is deliberate on the part of the establishment. They
want everything to be done using their equipment and resources.

Well some groups were filled with it and taken from the supported list
of newsgroups. A couple of years back the groups
for certain discussions were invaded by UK drug dealers. They
were a busy lot. My filter lists runs to 100s of these nether
orifices.

Probably RR (= Robert Riches) was talking about BS (= Bobby Sellers).
Also, I'm considering that (maybe) what BS did was part of a strategy to
put that scam on track. IOW, I suspect that BS and that throw-away are
connected. See, conspirology isn't that hard.

Also, rec.* I'm subscribed to wasn't hit at all. Probably isn't carried

Bobbie has nothing to do with any of that nonsense.

And as for conspirology — is that a word? — I am an administrator at
three forums that deal with conspiracy research (among other things),
but I happen to be a conspiracy-skeptic myself, and one of those forums
is filled to the roof with ludicrous conspiracy theories [*], so I'm
actually quite disgusted with the whole thing. I'm only doing it
anymore because of the technicalities of running the forums and the
friends I've made there.

[*] For instance, the pandemic isn't real. It's caused by 5G (1), which
operates at 60 GHz (2) and this causes the creation of ozone (3),
which damages the lungs (4). It's a plot of the New World Order
    (5) to have us adopt an authoritarian dictatorship.

    (1) False — it is very much a real virus.
    (2) False — 5G operates in the MHz range.
    (3) False — ozone is formed by ultraviolet light, whose frequency
lies in the THz to PHz range.
    (4) True, but only in very large quantities.
    (5) False — the quarantine is absolutely necessary in order to
spread out the contamination over a longer period, so
that the health services can more adequately deal with
                the number of infections.

All of the groups I'm subscribed to are GNU/Linux-related or generic
UNIX-related, and the list includes two Belgian (and thus
non-English-spoken) groups.

Yes, the poster I plonked was Bobbie Sellers.

I've seen it in almost all newsgroups I'm subscribed to: some
English speaking and serveral German speaking ones.

Only seeing the followups here, not the original. Seems the news server I
use has a good clean-feed (or how you called it).
