That's certainly the sensible explanation, but I've had scenarios like
that, even with my own code from the past, where I could swear up and
down that I myself had successfully used that code in the exact scenario
that would obviously break.

It's been a day or three but I think I did. iirc it also had the charming feature of only manifesting in the Windows build, not in Linux where I had valgrind and electric fence. Another mystery is why memory debuggers on Windows are expensive and barely usable. We had a Purify license but configuring the instrumentation was such a hassle it was rarely used. When the license came up for renewal nobody spoke up to keep it. BoundsChecker reportedly is even worse.

The same application would randomly use upper, lower or camel case to refer to the same filename...safe in the certain knowledge that the OS would translate it all to upper case. This is a big problem when writing programs for Windows and Linux.
Windows is "Case Preserving" (allowing upper and lower case mixed names,
but displaying them the way they were created) while Linux/eFS4
requires full match on file names. When accessing Linux files from
Windows, matches the Windows behavior. I REALLY wish that I could
get the Windows behavior as a mount option in Linux, but apparently
it is considered an unsurmountable problem that non-European languages
/ alphabets do not have the simple (mostly 1-1) relationship between
upper-case and lower-case, so to do the "right" thing would require
adding locale complexity in the file system. ("Is the mapping per-user
or systemwide?", "What to do with ligatures?", etc).
I wonder how Windows deals with that - Do they just limit the
case-matching to UTF-8 characters from the European subset?

So to convert an existing file system, you need to move it to a new partition in two passes: First you copy the folder structure Then you set the -F bit on all the folders Finally you copy all the files into the empty tree. Or as I found it explained in the AskUbuntu forum: <<< To format an existing partition with an existing ext4 filesystem, you just need to unmount, format and remount it, for example: umount /mnt/place mkfs.ext4 -O casefold /dev/<yourPartition> mount /dev/<yourPartition> /mnt/place chattr +F /mnt/place You need to use the partition name and mount point that is applicable to your configuration, do not type literally what I wrote above. The "chattr" command enables casefold on the root directory. It is required (and should be done while the filesystem is still empty) because a casefold formatted filesystem does not have casefold enabled by default. You can enable casefold per-directory and all files within it will have it enabled, so you can use part of the ext4 filesystem as usual, and part with this feature. By the way, if you’re using rsync to do the backup (you *are* using rsync, aren’t you?), after it’s finished, you can rerun the command with the “--checksum” option. This rechecks every byte of the backup to ensure it matches the original. This takes just as much time again as the backup copy did, but if you value your data ...

What for? If you are working for a hi-tech company, you have better ways to backup huge amount of data.
