Anyway Trump has essentially abrogated the USA's rôle in European affairs. He's said its down to Europe, so Europe will sort it. Now we know USA will not even fulfil NATO obligations there is no reason to buy any US weapons ever again. Or indeed US products. Given the tariff situation.. Donald wants isolation - he can have it. So get out of Iran, Venezuela, stop messing with Greenland and Canada and go back to Mar-a-lago and STFU. -- “It is hard to imagine a more stupid decision or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong.” Thomas Sowell

Well, for me AI is process (and its results) of trying to solve
problems that we can not solve using known (at given time) methods
and which seem to require inteligence. Important aspect is
that "solving" is supposed to produce a method that works not
for a single problem, but generalized to some class of problem.
One could split hairs asking if AI obtains some result and it
becomes well-known, is it still AI? As an example, early AI
spent a lot of effort on search. Regardless if now we consider
resulting alogrithms AI or not, important results were obtained
as part of AI research.
Coming back to 'expert systems', principle "you need domain
expert" seem to indicate the approach really was "study the
domain, once you collect enough knowledge you can write a
program". Which is what a good programming book of that
period told you to do. So more refined question may be: did
'expert systems' bring something new an valuable? They
boasted about a handful of successful systems, but details
about them seem to be quite sparse. And hard to see
anything systematic.
In "LESSONS LEARNED; Building Expert Systems" (AI EXPERT,
SEPTEMBER 1988) A. Bahil, P. Harris and E. Senn wrote:
"If it would take a human two days to solve the problem,
it is far too complicated for an expert system." They
also wrote that most system they looked at did not use
uncertainty factors or explanation capability of some
expert system shells. That looks for me as rather low
limitation on complexity of tasks solved by expert
systems and that solutions typically did not use fancy
features of expert system shells.
BTW: I asked a question. I would love to see an example
showing that 'expert system' methodology or tools really
made a difference in solving a problem. But I was not
able to find such an example.

1) If a machine could prove that P = NP, then it would be
big success and possibly indicate that such machine is
intelligent. But it looks that P is distinct from NP,
so "crossing the P/NP divide" probably is impossible.
Different things is that some instances of NP problems
are easy.
2) Ability to solve some instances of NP problems is IMO mindly
correlated with inteligence. People seem to have a lot of
trouble solving bigger/slightly harder instances easily solvable
by computers. And large progress made abut 20 years ago
in solving boolean satisfability (classic NP complete
problem) led to various applications, but AFAICS had minimal
impact at getting more inteligent behaviour from
computers.

(Someone please correct me if I'm handling some concept less than optimally:) AFAIK: No, because that'd not be a characteristic of AI, but more likely ground-breaking findings that'd affect all of computer science? In short: I think you may be mistaking NP's definition for a way to reduce NP problems to P ones. - What you hint at seems to really be the definition of NP itself? A strategy which falls under the AI label (the one used for decades, not the one in the GenAI hype) may be able to handle NP problems quicker within certain likelihoods, that's not making them P, that's just getting to solutions "at random", that can then be *verified* in polynomial time. The problem itself would still remain in NP, even if such algorithms have practical applications. The ability to address such problems in that way may be a good description of at least some of these AI techniques, but I think saying they're "solved in polynomial time" is taking it too far. Also, doesn't AI also include other techniques which aren't focused on this, such as pattern identification in datasets? -- Nuno Silva

Kinda complex. "AI" is generally understood as an "electronic human", delivers very similar results. The exact MEANS is irrelevant. "Expert systems", kind of an 80's thing, were VERY limited - basically lots of if/then/else constructs. This WAS good enough for a lot of needs however, still IS.

Ah, you've been on a 'help' call to Bangalore too then :-)

"The question of whether a computer can think is no more interesting
than the question of whether a submarine can swim." - Edsger Dijkstra
Mr. Dijkstra had his issues, but I'd say he hit the nail on the head
there.

The company keeps a helpdesk to allow staff to vent certain excess
pressures by ranting, just as other excess pressures are vented thanks
to the company installing toilets. Generally the toilets last longer.
