1 Thou shalt run lint frequently and study its pronouncements with
care, for verily its perception and judgement oft exceed thine.
2 Thou shalt not follow the NULL pointer, for chaos and madness
await thee at its end.
3 Thou shalt cast all function arguments to the expected type if
they are not of that type already, even when thou art
convinced that this is unnecessary, lest they take cruel
vengeance upon thee when thou least expect it.
4 If thy header files fail to declare the return types of thy
library functions, thou shalt declare them thyself with the
most meticulous care, lest grievous harm befall thy program.
5 Thou shalt check the array bounds of all strings (indeed, all
arrays), for surely where thou typest ‘‘foo’’ someone
someday shall type ‘‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’’.
6 If a function be advertised to return an error code in the event
of difficulties, thou shalt check for that code, yea, even
though the checks triple the size of thy code and produce
aches in thy typing fingers, for if thou thinkest ‘‘it
cannot happen to me’’, the gods shall surely punish thee for
thy arrogance.
7 Thou shalt study thy libraries and strive not to re-invent them
without cause, that thy code may be short and readable and
thy days pleasant and productive.
8 Thou shalt make thy program’s purpose and structure clear to thy
fellow man by using the One True Brace Style, even if thou
likest it not, for thy creativity is better used in solving
problems than in creating beautiful new impediments to
understanding.
9 Thy external identifiers shall be unique in the first six
characters, though this harsh discipline be irksome and the
years of its necessity stretch before thee seemingly without
end, lest thou tear thy hair out and go mad on that fateful
day when thou desirest to make thy program run on an old
system.
10 Thou shalt foreswear, renounce, and abjure the vile heresy
which claimeth that ‘‘All the world’s a VAX’’, and have no
commerce with the benighted heathens who cling to this
barbarous belief, that the days of thy program may be long
even though the days of thy current machine be short.

const can be annoying, but it forces one to *think*, which, as you
hint, can cause cursing.

NNs are a distinct tech from LLMs. In *theory* they have great potential ... and could be rather compact, fit inside a bot. However to realize this, special hardware is required, elements that are sort-of like neurons. They ARE getting there, I see articles from time to time. Had a nice book on NNs long back when the idea was first popular. Actually a "tome", like 500 pages. Alas I put it in the trash eventually because the tech of the time wasn't nearly up to the theory. However NNs wind up being done it won't be a 1980s model. According to Penrose, you need a quantum system - with its random mistakes - to emulate a brain. Kind of doubt that, but now we ARE seeing quantum computing so I guess we'll see. Direct, brute-force, silicon representations of neurons is stupid though. "Neuron-ISH", most characteristics but more as math or physical relationships, looks to be the future. In any case, a tech worth keeping an eye on.

I sort of miss one of my favorite terms 'long short term memory'. The wiki page starts off slow and then gets deep into the murk. The whole field tends to be headache inducing. Humans do fine in three dimensional Euclidean space with x, y, and z. Throw in w for the fourth dimension and the woo-woo starts particularly if it's interpreted as time. After that it's all Cloud Cuckoo Land. The tensor operations that worked in 3 or 4 dimensions work in any number of dimensions since it's all math but let's not think too hard about what it means. Consider Word2Vec... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word2vec Three dimensions and you can visualize those words over in that corner of the cube sort of hand together. 400 dimensions and you have sort of a problem. Then you get to the improvements on Word2Vec... I've got a feeling that the people who are really, really good at this are also really, really weird.

Then you get to the improvements on Word2Vec... 'Associations' are important in language processing, but they tend to expand exponentially and very soon you have a gigantic fur-ball. How to 'sensibly' constrain, channel, the depth and breadth of that ? You almost need an AI to manage the AI to manage the AI ......... I sometimes think real brains ARE kind of organized like that, 'micro minds' all doing their little things. > I've got a feeling that the people who are really, really good at this are > also really, really weird. This shit gets deep REALLY quick. Maybe if I was 13 again ... And yes, there ARE some people who just LOVE this sort of thing and every one I've met ... yea ... "weird". As for practical NNs ... the physical layer can be several things. You can emulate the required bits of a neuron in software. The holy grail is very tiny dedicated components the size of on-chip transistors but ultimately do much more. About 10 years ago the "memristor" was seen as a step in that direction but frankly I haven't seen them used in much of anything practical. Memristor-LIKE characteristics will be desired in any all-in-one solution. Neurons are weird unto themselves, they are not just one-shot pulsers with multiple weighted inputs. A couple billion years worth of selection involved in making neurons ....

It gets a bit out of hand for fiddling around at home. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpiNNaker I've been reading Trappenberg's book https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09TB9YH9M/ which also gets a bit deep. He digs into the Hodgkin–Huxley model. There is a lot going on when you start looking at the selective ion permeability of the cell wall creating a potential, neurotransmitters like GABA and dopamine, and the spike timing it's not easy to model. https://www.amazon.com/dp/0262181231 is the text we used in the '80s before the onset of another AI winter. Rumelhart's backpropagation solved some of the earlier problems starting with the perceptron. Improvements have been made with the activation functions, simulated annealing to solve the local minimum problem and so forth but the concepts in a 2025 NN tutorial are familiar. The nice part of PyTorch, TensorFlow, and other libraries is you can patch together high level functions without getting into the nuts and bolts of calculating gradient descent and all that grunt work.

Fortunately those functional models can be reduced to much simpler 'representations' of the physical. "Spiking" IS the way to go however, vastly more energy efficient. > I've been reading Trappenberg's book > > https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09TB9YH9M/ Looks like it may be good ... and it's cheap too. > which also gets a bit deep. Very much part of a total system of 'support' cells and neurotransmitters which all mod the operation. Evolution generally makes a goopey mess of things. One of the cooler finds was that nerves, esp peripherial nerves, don't just blip blip blip but ENCODE info for transmission ... lets one nerve handle a bunch of sensory inputs. > > is the text we used in the '80s before the onset of another AI winter. > Rumelhart's backpropagation solved some of the earlier problems starting > with the perceptron. They're making it easier. A little more easy and I may have the energy to get back into it. LLMs require a 20-acre building packed with boxes packed with NVidia chips (plus a gigawatt or two or ten) just to achieve whatever level of IQ/personhood they have. Not very efficient and only practical for some kinds of uses. NNs have much more potential IF, as said, they finally come up with the perfect hardware for the job.

But not when consciousness is an emergent property of said quantum field. You end up with recursion and paradox. The only schema that works is to place consciousness in an orthogonal dimension to both quantum reality AND the 'classical' reality. Hmm ... complicated industrial-control panels, maybe brains too, the software is the hardware. I'm not qualified to fine-critique Penrose. However when he insisted brains MUST be quantum ... some little red light went off in my head.

To anyone who has studied Kant, it is clear that it is the mind that invented 'quantum theory'...so to make it an emergent property of its own creation, is the wrong sort of feedback -- The higher up the mountainside The greener grows the grass. "Immanuel Kant was a real piss-ant who was very rarely stable ....." :-) I spoke of re-arranging the arcade of fun-house mirrors over and over and claiming to see some Great Truth through the current configuration. Kant is just one of those re-arrangers, tortures semantics and perspectives like so many others.

The point us that metaphysics does not and never can reveal the Great Truth, in the terms in which the classical Realist wants it revealed, any more than can science. That was Hume's crucial point. The logic of induction or inference is unprovable. Kant thought around it and came up with a possible metaphysic that coped with that defect. (Which by definition, also could not be proved to be true). But, it works *better*. Metaphysics is the study of making (necessary) assumptions about the nature of the world and humanity, and seeing where those assumptions lead. In a sense Kant's Critique of Pure Reason was the prescience of the Problem Of Consciousness, and his remedy was Transcendental Idealism, a possible construction that made the equations balance, so to speak. Now, centuries later, we probably need to look at it again. At that time the major metaphysical shift was to remove God from direct intervention in the world and create the metaphysics of Causality, and Natural Law. That allowed the pursuit of science, so well that it convinced many people that *the assumptions must be true*. The world really *was* 'separate things' connected by 'natural laws' and 'Cause and Effect'. And our pursuit of these 'separate things' and the 'natural laws' governing them led to the absurdity of QM etc. The world apparently is just a big single quantum field, which only appears to resemble classical reality when we attempt to observe it. And so precisely what Kant said we did. Split it up into things and events all dancing in a space time theatre interceded by transforms of the inherent connectivity, that appear as 'causality' The problem is, what are we, doing all this interpretation and observation? -- I would rather have questions that cannot be answered... ...than to have answers that cannot be questioned Richard Feynman

You really think that they do?
In reality they would prefer to take the salary and the perks and do
fuck all. The best ones.
The worst ones are those with Big Beautiful Ideas.
Most problems that haven't been solved already are not amenable to
political interference anyway: the best thing is to give people the
freedom to sort them, themselves.
