It's far from convenient inside thunderbird. It's better with slrn. When I'm reading messages with slrn, [Echap]-[R] is easier, but when I'm writing them I'm in vim, so it's easy to use. I haven't used Thunderbird in a very long time, but prior discussion of
rot13 in this thread would seem to indicate that it requires an add-on,
and a quick google would seem to support that.

Something like "progressive ROT-4" - where each letter gets pushed ahead more and more until it wraps around - would be better. I did write an 'obfuscation utility' which actually got SOME use at my employers ... it did something like that with some XORs involved too. IF you knew HOW it was done there was HOPE of recovering the text (well, it was 256-bit, worked on binaries) in maybe a day of work while with more traditional encryption if you lose the key you are SCREWED. Anyway, 'encryption', are you the CIA or a big bank or weapons developer ? Then you probably don't need the really hard-core stuff. Most common is to hide like 'employee reviews' from other employees.

Come anywhere near FIPS 140-3 and you better have your act together. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIPS_140-3 There is a Windows registry setting that flags any encryption technique that doesn't use the certified crypto libraries. Microsoft recommends not setting it since it tends to break things.

So much for actual "security". For most 'office' uses you do NOT need AES-256 encryption for yer damned payroll or budget files. Nobody, not even Vlad or Xi, CARES. As said, simpler 'obfuscation' can keep yer office stuff 'secure ENOUGH'. The MAIN practical use is to hide what supervisors say about subordinates, or vice versa, for 'political' reasons. Obfuscation can be back-tracked in case anyone loses the PW. You just have to know how it was done. With harder encryption, if you lose the PW you're pretty much screwed.
