I'd wind up using PyTorch to create a model to differentiate raccoons from cats since random cats also show up otherwise I could use a PIR sensor. I've got a bunch of those. I might have to throw some skunk images into the training set too. Zapping a skunk might not be the best idea. The kibble feeder depredations make enough noise to wake me up so I can go out and shoot his furry ass with a pellet gun. That's become more difficult. He used to stand there and say "What the hell do you want?" but now he exits rapidly. They're cute and all but they're destructive little bastards.

I think they have been used semi-domesticated as pets by people who are rich enough to pay for the damage their "pet" may inflict. Raccoons are possibly capable of domestication thru the same method as foxes have been turned into expensive pets. That is to say by selective breeding over a relatively few generations for the proper behavioral traits. These will be like dogs which is the domesticated version of wolves. Thus the wild versions of foxes or raccons will not be the same "race" as the domesticated. Likely they will be capable of interbreeding with the wild but they will have different markings and so forth. Domesticated animals can have colors and so forth that might not contribute to the survival of animals but which fanciers of the exotic pets will select for in breeding as we see in dogs or cats. bliss

A couple of years ago a Manx cat showed up. The cat had problems but seemed happy until a well meaning neighbor took her to the vets. That was the one way trip I thought it would be. Breeding them is controversial since a variety of problems go along with the mutation and many kittens die or are put down at birth. I assume the Manx was a case of taking Fluffy out to the country, kicking them out of the car, and wishing them good luck.

Like in those movies, raccoons would probably be a good starting-point for IQ-enhancement genetic technology. Then there are apes ... but DO use bonobos and orangs instead of chimps. Some octopi could be good investments. Dolphins/orcas ... sorry, no hands = no future alas. We DO know the most critical genes/repeats required for better brains these days, so. Bet someone, probably in China, is doing this already. They're not so squeamish about 'mistakes' there ... into the incinerator, try again .....

Some areas in the city have bear-proof trash containers and advise people to avoid leaving pet food out and to get the fruit off the trees. The bears have figured out life is easier when humans are around. https://flashbak.com/feeding-the-bears-at-yellowstone-photos-from- the-1950s-and-1960s-448098/ When we went through Yellowstone in '52 part of the attraction was the bears lining up along the road to cadge handouts. Returning to the cabin after a fireside ranger talk we saw a bear sorting through the dumpster. I didn't see any bears the last time I passed though, 2019?. There still are campsites where you need a hard shell camper and not a tent though.

Cute baby bear ! Momma bear won't mind if we run up to cuddle it ! ... They try to cuddle buffalo too. Too much Disney ..... Japan, bear attacks are up SO much that now they're sending ARMY units in to deal with them. The beasties are walking straight into buildings and proceeding to try and eat people. The mil can't seem to figure out that a 5.56 isn't the best bear weapon alas ... a 12ga with buckshot and/or slugs works much better. No, you don't need a .500 Nitro Express, no armored bears here.

I go with a .357 but that isn't optimal.

I go with a .357 but that isn't optimal. Too small for maybe all but southeastern bears. 44 mag minimum, pref in a carbine. I think you can still get 265gr 44 bullets. SOMEbody makes a .50 S&W pistol/lever combo set ... saw an ad. Saw an old live cop show, Alaska, huge brown bear TOO close up - the cop took it down with a 12ga. Largest polar bears ... might want a tad more. The .375 H&H is good for most any thin-skinned critters. KICKS like a too-light 12ga alas :-) Lower-48 ... some park/conservation employees have determined that the .338 Mag rifle is as effective on the big stuff as the .375, but with less recoil.

Well, if it's an angry bear then we don't care how many pieces ..... :-) Alas both of those options are just a bit heavy to carry through hill country unless you're 19, large, and take lots of steroids. All-around for Alaska, .338 WM. If bears are a concern, the top ctg should be a heavier bullet. Hmm ... they USED to make something called a "drilling" ... like a heavy rifle or shotgun with a small-caliber rifle barrel on top, usually .22 ... good for big stuff and for rabbits roasting on the campfire.

Savage still makes a .22/.410 combo. I don't know if .410 has become more available with the .410/.45LC revolvers. Like 16 gauge it got scarce. My mother had a 16 ga. which was considered a ladies shotgun in her day but now it's all 12 or 20.
