I remember 'Ayds' but NOT sure what they were made of.
DOUBT they contained any speed, maybe a dose-dependent
   nauseating agent ???

   Ah :

   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayds

"The active ingredient was originally benzocaine,[1]
presumably to reduce the sense of taste to reduce eating,
later changed in the candy (as reported by The New York
   Times) to phenylpropanolamine.[2]"

So, basically, it was a stomach anesthetic.

   As for phenylpropanolamine :

" Phenylpropanolamine is a decongestant. It works by
constricting (shrinking) blood vessels (veins and arteries)
in your body. Constriction of blood vessels in your sinuses,
nose, and chest allows drainage of those areas, which
   decreases congestion.

Phenylpropanolamine is used to treat the congestion associated
with allergies, hay fever, sinus irritation, and the common
cold. Phenylpropanolamine also causes a decrease in appetite
and is used in some over-the-counter diet aids.

Phenylpropanolamine has been associated with an increased
   risk of hemorrhagic stroke "

Should have stuck with benzocaine ....

They had a marketing problem when AIDS became a household word. There also
was a diet candy that used ephedrine before the FDA banned the sale.
Ephedra is effective for weight loss but is not patentable. Can't have the
masses self-medicating with an herb the Chinese have used for a few
thousand years. No money in that.

Ephedra is a little TOO ... esp for blood pressure.

   Maybe OK if you're 17, but .....

Ephedrine is the starting stock for amphetamines.
Add, subtract, move a few atoms.

LONG LONG back I found a jar of 'norepinephrine'
in a college bio lab and ATE a little. Really NOT
pleasant ... just queasy 'tension' for several hours.

Hmmm ... knew a 'reformed' speed freak at that
college. He said he finally realized he'd gone
too far when he couldn't get a needle and thought
about literally slicing open a vein so he could
   pour the powder in :-)

Yep, CAN get THAT bad .....

Canned Heat was one of the bands I saw back in the day. I think de la
Parra is the only one left. I wore out the Hooker N' Heat album. Years
later I saw Hooker. It was in a tiny venue out in the Maine woods, nothing
but Hooker and 3 million mosquitoes. He had an old wooden skid he would
stomp on in lieu of a drummer. He really showed that 'all them fancy
chords don't mean a thing if it ain't got the rhythm'.

You should very grateful that your software and hardware
is able to display all those fancy fonts.

Digital font processing is a very compute-intensive activity
and without speedy modern hardware you would be biting your
fingernails in pure frustration.

Nope. Didn't happen in the 90's with Word Perfect in text mode. It
simply needs the programmers to adapt to the capabilities of the
existing machines.

He's probably up to 250mg by now :-)

Kind of sounds like some kid who just got
his driving license - EVERYTHING is a race,
a competition. Gotta be "Speed Racer" !!!

Or, maybe he programs everything in 'B' just
because it Hurts So Much :-)

For some things pure speed IS important, esp if
you're crunching lots of numbers or sorting
millions of records. However "faster" is more
subtle than that ... faster DEVELOPMENT and
   MAINT are another perspective.

For string-heavy stuff, Python does excel in
that latter def. Pascal a close second. 'C'
   a distant third.

FORTRAN's string-slicing was kinda copied into
Python ... good move. Alas very few people these
days who have EVER writ a single line of FORTRAN.

I like to write some Little Stuff into FORTRAN
every so often, just to keep my hand in. The GNU
version works ok, but more native F77 seems
   more 'honest'.

Speedy ought to like FORTRAN, it's compiler fast !

Python 'compilers' ... I've tried a few with
varying success. Fine nuances in the version
and libs are the main obstacles. Some only
'compile' to de-facto 'P-Code' too. 'Nuitka'
works pretty well. Alas, for broad compatibility,
you probably want to include yer current libs
into the binary. This creates a rather large
binary (not SO important these days but I
   remember the 8-bit/64k world).

Oh, you CAN get 'B' compilers for Linux ...
almost 'C', but Hurts More .......

Remember when LISP, then PROLOG, were "The
   Future Of Everything" ? :-)

   Too many fuckin' BRACKETS ........

Still looking for a Modula-3 compiler for
Linux that actually works ... the Canadian
one crashes fast and hard ........

I could say something about M-expressions, but I guess these will end up
having the same-ish amount of parens, just differently-shaped and
-placed.

(I don't see an issue with parens, personally; subjectively I see more
of an issue in Python's reliance on whitespace.)

It took me a long time to get onboard with the whitespace thing.
Particularly annoying is the visual appearance of two tabs with the
tabstop set to 4 and 8 spaces that is rejected plus the joy of cut'n'paste
from a block that is more/less deeply indented.

Philosophically I can appreciate PEP8's attempt to prevent the code from
turning into the Wild West but still. I've gotten better at setting up Vim
correctly and using ruff to clean the code up.

At least with parens I could use Vim to bounce back and forth to determine
I had 8 on one end and only 7 on the other. Of course mismatches aren't
unique to Lisp, it's just the way the parens pile up together. I'd get
better if I used it regularly.

You just reminded me of a non working feature in joe, jstar mode.

^K^B ... ^K^K to mark a block of text.

^K^I supposedly should increase indent one space. Doesn't work.

Just found it, it is:

^K. more
^K, less

instead. This is not how Turbo Pascal did it. Well, at least I found it.

Of course, jstar emulates WordStar. The turbopascal editor used the WS
keys, too.

   Kinda.

   But WordStar was good.

WordStar was designed for touch typists.

Curio: they designed variants of it that had different interface sets.

I forget most younger folks were never
trained to do that. The 2-finger approach
   at best :-)

I've seen different commands, user-definable commands
as well. Mostly it's a sub-set of commands however.
