Didn't somebody write a song about that ? :-) "And if you take some more of those, you will get an over-dose ..."

Mother's pills were spansules. Not as good as the real thing but in a pinch would do. Then she started counting them... My GF was on ritalin which was also better than nothing. When I saw the Airplane at the Palace Theater Gracie started the show by asking 'Is it legal to say 'fuck' in Albany NY?' Great concert in a relatively small venue.

Being a 50s/60s "housewife" was awful. A pre-defined, social/govt defined, standard existence that crushed the soul. SO many potential better options, but mommies just couldn't. The State wanted dumb compliant mommies who'd pump out cannon-fodder by the barrel-full to fight The Reds.

Yep, LOTS more of those - and they're CHEAP cannon fodder. However, worth noting, the whole military equation is rapidly shifting now. "AI"/robotic weapon systems instead. You don't NEED lots of human soldiers ... pain in the ass and INFERIOR too. It'll be bot-vs-bot now. HUMAN soldiers/police/Stasi ... there WILL still be a short-term use for them, but as INTERNAL security to threaten political upstarts/dissidents. But a little later, RoboCops all. Hey, WE made it ... now have to try and LIVE with it. It'll SUCK.

Alas the only mommies producing many kidlets are NOT what many would call 'White Christian Euro-Americans', but 'hispanic' or 'black'. This is not just a USA thing ... most of the first world is NOT staying ahead of the population curve. Women don't HAVE to have tons of kids, don't WANT to, so they DON'T. It really won't be THAT long before Japan and Korea are naught but historical geographic names ... the long-term cultures GONE. It will be the 'foreign help' living there instead. "You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too, from the bottom of a long glass tube" - only 'fix' :-) Actually, by 6565 the AIs will have probably replaced everybody ... maybe not even THAT long, not nearly .... Hmmmm ... will the AIs keep a "Savage Reservation" for amusement and educational purposes ? Just askin'

Docs quickly got tired of women telling them they "didn't feel quite right" and thus gave them brain-numbing drugs. The 50s/60s "housewife" became an unbearable trap for many women ... drove 'em nuts.

Barbiturates were handed out like candy mints, prescribed by legitimate MDs, and filled by your local friendly pharmacist. All legal and above board. Nembutal (yellows) and Seconal (reds) were the most common. The benzodiazepines like Valium were supposed to be less addictive and dangerous than the barbiturates like heroin was supposed to be the kinder, gentler morphine. SSRIs are the popular feel good drugs today. Side effects may include suicide and hypomania. One could ask what is it about modern society that causes a large proportion of the people to be medicated. My self-medication drug of choice is caffeine but I've always preferred uppers to downers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm51ihfi1p4 "I wanna be sedated Nothin' to do, nowhere to go-ho I wanna be sedated"

An poorly- informed brute-force approach to even often minor complaints. >> One could ask what is it about modern society that causes a large >> proportion of the people to be medicated. > > Heavy advertising by Big Pharma and shitty politicians, for a start. Yea ... but it's EXPECTATIONS too ... largely a product of television/advertisers. Everybody THINKS they should be like the animated chippy people in the TV shows. If not, well, means you're SICK, right ? The modern world offers SO many attractive options, but only a small percentage are up to any of that ... a more boring existence instead. Alas the bored IMAGINE they can be like the stars/celebs, like THAT is normal and desireable. So, pop lots of pills to calm yer brain ... >> My self-medication drug of >> choice is caffeine but I've always preferred uppers to downers. > > Me too, although since I never developed a taste for coffee > I go for Coca-Cola (Coke Zero these days). Can't drink coffee, burns the shit out of my stomach ... and tea turns my teeth black and soft-drinks are LOADED with sugar or fake sugar that's VERY bad for my metabolism. So, caf pills. Kinda hard sometimes to find the larger ones that are easy to split up. The idea is to nibble maybe 300mg over the day.
