Maybe this thread should have been "Most DANGEROUS Linux CL commands" ??? You CAN do huge damage in an instant with some of those.

No, I vote for "ZDnet silently recycles three-month-old article, adding apt-get" or "ZDnet's misleading 'clickbait' practices on linux-related articles". At this rate, the author could just have started a category or "column" on this and published articles there, instead of engaging in this. If apt-get was to be an addition, why not write just about it? (Although I do wonder if it makes sense, given it's a package management tool for specific distributions...) http://web.archive.org/web/20250812162303if_/https://www.zdnet.com/article/im-a-linux-expert-and-here-are-6-commands-i-cant-live-without/ Do note where the article's address redirects to: https://www.zdnet.com/article/im-a-linux-expert-and-here-are-6-commands-i-cant-live-without/ It's now silently replaced with https://www.zdnet.com/article/7-linux-commands-i-cant-live-without-after-20-years-in-the-terminal/ To be fair, this seems to be a distinct article from the "8 commands" one, albeit now purportedly from the same date. But I also wonder about the other articles from the same author... that would require more diving down the wayback machine and right now I don't have time for that. Yet the silent republication and replacement of one of the articles without much new content looks suspicious to me. -- Nuno Silva

Which is why I pointed out, to another of your posts, that the CLI is hardly 'fool proof' when you made that claim, but rather is better described as "rigidly unforgiving". If the CLI user makes the wrong mistake, they could (if running as root) hose the entire system, or if running as themselves hose all their users files.

But GNU rm is not portable for that, if the directory you want gone is / :-P -- Nuno Silva

Although if I'm using a fancy wildcard specification, I'll often first type it into an ls command and see what comes out. If it looks good I'll hit up-arrow to recall the command and change "ls" to "rm". -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | Growth for the sake of \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | growth is the ideology X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | of the cancer cell. / \ if you read it the right way. | -- Edward Abbey

Nowadays you can also hit tab once or twice, and see what candidates it shows. This can be handy to save typing in uses other than deleting files: if there is only one expansion candidate, Bash, at least, will replace your wildcard spec with that.
