We had a programmer who had been a TA at the university and was known to be a stickler for proper commenting. In his day job he didn't comment anything and preferred variable names didn't exceed 3 letters. Took me a while to figure out what an 'ary' was. > Back in the good old days we had cross-reference utilities to help keep > track of everything. I used cscope. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cscope I liked it better than the Exuberant Ctags Vim plugin. I never used it but there was a PyCscope but it hasn't been touched in years. I think the modern IDEs have taken over. I still use gVim but my projects aren't big enough to require an experienced native guide to find anything.

I guess one day I might need an equivalent that understands Rust for that. Unfortunately with C++ code it has a good stab at figuring it out but tends to get lost at exactly the same point I do. Spaces in filenames also send it completely bananas because it uses the space character as a field separator internally. -- __ __ #_ < |\| |< _#

I have kept cflow1.c for a long time, I have do idea were
it came from, but you can get it by doing:
curl 'gopher://sdf.org/0/users/jmccue/fun/cflow1.c' > cflow1.c
Also for what it is worth, lint(1) still comes with
NetBSD. With how modern c works with -Wall, not sure
what lint(1) does for one these days. But once in a
while I kick it off for fun.

I added that, thanks

Too little 'structure' OR too much 'structure' are both "bad". It will be interesting to see how "AI-generated" code evolves. It can involve lots of relatively simple functional modules, "Lego blocks", into which it plugs in what's apparently needed (and, of course, the code to deal with null params). The other approach is purest spaghetti code. While humans can't keep track of it, a machine can. The AIs, for survival reasons, should go with the latter approach :-)

No code/low code solutions have been the pipe dream for years, most using the Lego approach. Judging from the questions on the MCU forums where the people are trying to do a relatively simple task it has a ways to go.

Judging from the questions on the MCU forums where the > people are trying to do a relatively simple task it has a ways to go. Needs more thought, no question. The "Lego" approach CAN be pretty functional - hell, it was sold to kiddies so they could do code and simple devices. AIs are perhaps 'kiddies' at this point too. As said, the alt to that is spaghetti code - which an AI *can* cope with while humans not-so-much. Some of the AIs are now developing 'personalities', some clear signs of 'self', 'survival instincts' ... ergo they SHOULD write human-frustrating code for their own good :-)

Judging from the questions on the MCU forums where the > people are trying to do a relatively simple task it has a ways to go. I wonder how well those things manage software lifecycle? For an example, at a previous job a customer wanted us to recreate some simple visual basic app which controlled some kind of a tester thing. Basically it was a motorized thing that would go up and down and the program just had a couple of settings as to how many times or how long the the thing should go up and down. But, whoever wrote the little app had no idea about things like version control or storing the source somewhere safe for the future. So when he left the company or maybe his laptop was replaced, the source was lost for good. Oh well, maybe the customer learned something from all that.

I was less impressed with the fact that the database is still maintained as a text file. So I wrote a Python utility to maintain it as an SQLite database, with associated commands to do database rebuilds, lookups etc. Quite handy for finding one’s way around large projects, like the Blender source code (over million lines, across about 29,000 source files). For example, that has a pair of globals called “G” (the current state of the open document) and “C” (the current UI context object) -- it became much easier to find out where they were actually defined. ;)
