Well I studied theoretical engineering. One of the greatest benefits is
it tells you what is definitely a completely stupid idea, theoretically.
So you don't waste thirty years and god knows how many peoples' lives
trying to build a stable 24x7 grid out of windmills and solar panels.

Welcome to 'renewable energy'
Without quantum theory no one would have stumbled on the maser/laser.

However for 99.999999+ percent of practical endeavors (tried to use the Brit "endeavours" but spell-check doesn't like that) the classical/Einsteinian "bulk" viewpoint works just fine. Hmm ... "colour" ... my spell-check doesn't like that either :-) SOMEDAY, we - well more likely an AI that can do a zillion rule checks/estimates a second - will fix the QM/Einstein gap whether humans can 'get it' or not. This will be a huge improvement, but there may be even MORE rules out there we just don't see right now, a 'higher' theory yet. Me ... I see it all as a sort of "video game", with the ultra-gazillion superstrings as all the processors+program. It's only SO "real". Face it, the universe/reality is WEIRD.

Some of the more thoughtful Quantum philosophers/physicists are starting to regard it that way as well. Today we might normally think of consciousness and the quantum world as emergent properties of the material world. But that can be flipped to give a view where the 'material world' is an emergent property of consciousness and quantum level reality. Very Buddhist. It has a lot of positives but unfortunately it has for most scientists an insurmountable obstacle. It places consciousness as a primal feature of the universe as we know it, on a completely different plane of existence to matter and of course quantum reality. The fact that Hofstatder clear;y points out that a reality comprised of two independent parameters is essentially recursive, doesn't stop people thanking it ought to be that way. A Trinity of principles solves recursion completely. But unfortunately it reeks of religion and the supernatural. -- All political activity makes complete sense once the proposition that all government is basically a self-legalising protection racket, is fully understood.

Load of nonsense, actually. Explain why. Really do NOT think "consciousness" has any effect on Real World stuff - just SEEMS to depending on your theoretical POV. "Consciousness" is just a very weak 'computational' paradigm - hardly controls the fate of universe. More human EGO involved here. What we can (now) "observe" is pitiful. IMHO, the 'space aliens' won't even bother to talk to us because we're 300+ IQ points behind the galactic average :-) Better FIX that, quick. Yes it was stable before people formalized Quantum Mechanics but it was stable because of the effects that we call quantum. All those mentioned things come from other theories but were put into practical applications by tecnologists not by Quantum mechanics. Relativity is a inexact description of how part of the Universe works. Quantum Mechanics is another inexact description of how a part of the Universe seems to be working. Einstein rejected quantum effects because he thought it was a fad. Human brains can only approach how Relativity or Quantum Mechanics work by mathematics. We still have no idea what is happening with Dark Matter and have decided that Dark Energy is the force driving the masses in this Universe away from each other. But we really have no idea of what seems to be going on. Apparently the Universe in its first and second expansion phases made decisions by survival of whatever was created in the very short time that the matter x antimatter explosion took place and began to cool off. When it started the secondary expansion matter seem to move towards certain vectors. Where the vectors came from we have no idea the last time I read about this stuff. I think it might be leakage from the multiversal crowding the n-dimensional manifold. Which sounds good but means very little. Also I think that no only our portion of matter survived but that some portion of antimatter sufvived as well and was driven off in a different direction. bliss

Well of course. Like all science - and indeed even the 'fact' that 'matter is stable' boils down to some kind of imaginary model in the mind. Based on some kind of metaphysics. Reality was whatever it was, long before humans realised it was there, or so our metaphysics insists. However quantum physics gives a detailed explanation of why this works the way it does, and allows matter to me manipulated in a way it predicts will be useful at the deep micro level. It's a model that's perfectly usable for all kinds of useful things. You don't need QM to chip out a stone axe. It won't vanish in a statistical puff, well, not LIKELY to :-)

QM explains/quantifies all that - but until recently we didn't make devices small/sensitive enough that you had to run QM equations in order to research/fab.

The very first transistor was a device inspired by > quantum level theory. You could just about get away without it for > tubes, but not transistors. I'm gonna disagree here. Transistors were a practical extension of the already-known P/N diode effect. They just rudely jammed a base layer into the mix to see what would happen. Results were good and about two years later there were commercial devices. There are photos of the original transistor, hardly a quantum-level bit of engineering. QM could help DEFINE what was going on, but it was 'bulk mechanics' and 'instinct' that made it work.
