Seems like Microsoft’s attempt to fight back against Google’s
Chromebooks in the education market has been a failure, and it is
giving up
<https://www.tomshardware.com/software/windows/microsoft-ending-windows-11-se-support-october-2026-chrome-os-competitor-also-wont-get-version-25h2-update-coming-later-this-year>.
Put the blame on trying to squeeze the Windows quart into the pint-pot
of low-cost, purpose-built educational machines:
Microsoft hasn't given a formal reason as to why they are ending
Windows 11 SE. Presumably, one of the biggest challenges was that
despite being a version meant for classrooms, it was fundamentally
based on the full version of Windows 11. This meant it struggled
to run well on the low-cost devices that schools often buy, a
space where Chrome OS thrives. Google’s offering continues to be a
truly lightweight cloud-based operating system designed from the
ground up for this purpose.
Does this mean we stop including Chromebooks as part of the “desktop”
market that Windows is supposedly king of?

Do you work for M$ ? :-) They'd LOVE that ! Anyway, if it's any modern Winders it's HEAVY and requires a lot of cpu/mem. Institutions prefer to buy cheap hardware. They SHOULD run Linux ... but that's just too alien for them ... they'd pref a Big Brand Name like Google because it still seems "mainstream". Hey, politics, appearances outrank reality.

That’s what Windows SE was trying to do, and > failed. > They only support SKUs that make sense. Nadella originally wanted to clean up the SKU mess, but the business people went on a campaign to explain to him how it was a good thing. Having licensing schemes so complicated, you need specially trained humans to tell you what items to buy to license your software. That means that originally, the SE SKU might never have got off the ground. The business people who make the money, created a thing like that. And it's up to them to check the head count needed to support it, configure it, bug fix it, exploit fix it. If a product isn't profitable, you discontinue it. Look at Intel as an example of a slow motion wreck. Microsoft makes adjustments like everyone else. Maybe it was an easy decision, when reducing head count, to just trim that whole project for the head count. Remember, that every big fat high tech company, lives in terror of competition. If the margin per unit is razor thin, there will be pressure from business people to remove it. Maybe some level of management wanted the idea of "virtually competing with Google for the cheesy equipment space". But the Surface hardware group, that's a high margin group, and the company expects more margin from them. It would be inconsistent, to be running a project charging very little per SE license, and running it as a charity. You could not charge much for the SE license, and allow a hardware maker to compete with Chrome Books. This is why Intel had to stop making $5 processors. It was very good at it, but some business person (an MBA one would guess), would do an analysis and tell the management to make $1000 processors instead, because the margins are larger. You don't exactly need an MBA to figure this stuff out. Logitech couldn't make any more cheap mice, so... it made some more expensive mice. There was a period of re-jigging, where companies that could not stand the heat in the kitchen, they went up-market. They put extra buttons on their mice, 19200 DPI optics, and other silly stuff. The mid-range pricing, better able to suit their taste for margin. Paul

It wasn’t just another SKU with a different price (and licence), it actually had built-in functional limitations to ensure it was not competing with regular, full-fat Windows. Unfortunately, those limitations did little or nothing to reduce its resource usage. > Remember, that every big fat high tech company, lives in terror of > competition. Look at Windows Phone and Windows RT for older examples, and the Steam Deck and SteamOS for a current one. Oh, and of course, Chromebooks. > This is why Intel had to stop making $5 processors. It was very good > at it ... Like Atom? No, I don’t think it was good at those. They were never very popular as ARM alternatives in mobile phones. I think Intel had to practically give them away to get phone makers to use them; as soon as it tried to charge a reasonable price at which it could make a profit, the market dried up. So it eventually gave up. NUC is another example, this time trying to compete with the Raspberry Pi in the “Maker” market, only this one was in totally the wrong price bracket. No wonder it didn’t stand a chance.

No wonder it didn’t stand a chance. NUC was a project to "out-miniaturize" the ITX market. The ITX market was making small machines (did VIA start that ?), and Intel wanted to show people how much smaller you could go. Intel also did some prototypes of even smaller core assemblies, which did not go into production that I know of. I don't think NUC was a business driven model. It was a tech push project by a team inside Intel, to "see what it would look like if Intel did it". The Business people then segmented it above mini-ITX and charged higher fees for the stuff. And the NUC was eventually dumped, as there is competition, and I don't know how many of those they could move at $800, when cheesy versions are selling for $250. Since the computing market is quite price sensitive, yes, I know of one USENETter who used to buy NUCs, there are people who don't care about a mere $800, but they also want the expansion capability when they buy one (they want perfection for their $800). I think it was tech push, because I cannot figure out how you would start a business like that by writing a business case for it. It would not have gone very far at Intel, if only MBAs worked on it. Maybe one of the executives thought it was cool, and that's why it stuck around. Paul

And the NUC was eventually dumped ... But they didn’t quite dump it, instead they passed it off to another vendor (Asus). If/when Asus decides they can’t make the business model work either, then presumably they will abandon it, to much less fanfare than if Intel were to be the ones doing it. To me, this seems like a corporate face-saving measure, nothing more. Similar to how Microsoft acquired Nokia’s entire mobile-phone business, just to avoid the imminent high-profile abandonment of Windows Phone and embrace of Android by the latter.

Yeah for you and me, but are there the same purchasing and support agreements available which Acer and Lenovo supply as their bread and butter kitting out the world's office cubicles? I don't _know_, but I seriously doubt that a computer which isn't even sold in a case would be a real option in typical business settings, even though it _could_ theoretically save a huge amount of money. I always imagined that the NUCs weren't really for you and me, they were for those businesses who've been buying generic (shrinking) PCs from Acer or Lenovo for decades. Of course after they're done with them they become those "refurb machines" which make much more sense for you and me to buy. Intel had a good marketing idea to brand their attempt "NUC", which might have been their biggest innovation to separate their little PC boxes from the competition. -- __ __ #_ < |\| |< _#

Intel had a good marketing idea to > brand their attempt "NUC", which might have been their biggest > innovation to separate their little PC boxes from the competition. > I don't think NUC started for Intel, as a business plan PowerPoint slide. Personal opinion, they did a number of lab projects, some of them sank without a trace. The NUC was never going to have a huge volume, in the same sense that Microsoft Surface is as much a vanity project for MSFT, as it was an "attempt to become a Dell". Honestly, I don't know why Intel does some of the things it does. Everyone knows the chief financial officer, does not like things that distract from the main business, and projects regularly get a fork stuck into them. (Apparently RealSense is now part of a separate company.) The computer industry is risk-averse to some extent. None of the companies would make a mini-ITX on their own, because if your form factor idea is a flop, you could be out the cost of the NRE, plus around a million dollars worth of stock produced as the "first batch" of the idea. Most of the companies are content to "watch another company take the risk", then they arrive to market "second", perhaps making a nicer looking product or doing a minimal amount of evolution to the base idea. For Intel then, the NUC represents a form factor experiment. The other lab projects (some smaller than a NUC), there was no pickup or interest in them, because as ideas they were half-finished. But basically, for Intel, the first NUC would be several million dollars worth of risk as a "formfactor play". If the formfactor became popular (BeeLink), then more Intel processors could be sold. It would be presumed on Intels part, that other parts of the company would make the 6 Watt processor needed for the sales of at least a portion of the small boxes. Some of the NUC are i9 material, and quite powerful (but also quite expensive). Putting a 6W processor in a little box like that, plays into a different price range of the market (a 6W processor being perilously close to "junk"). Intel has to be careful when doing these projects, to not eat into the lucrative laptop market. There are good margins in laptops, and they would not want to spoil the laptop market, by offering too much value in one of these little formfactor plays. Paul

I have an Acer Swift 3 laptop with the Ryzen 7 processor. With the obvious exception of the display and keyboard the Beelink SER 4 has almost identical hardware. That was a factor in my choice of the SER 4. When I bought the laptop in 2020 it was $679.99. In 2022 the Beelink was $389.00. I run a 4 channel KVM so the peripherals weren't an additional cost but if you had to buy them it would eat up a lot of the $290. i prefer AMD anyway but when I looked at the Intel NUCs in '22 they weren't competitive.

Some of the refurb machines might have more horsepower. https://radxa.com/products/x/x4/ The N100 should handle Windows as well as any of the low cost minis and it throws in a 2040 ARM processor for the GPIO capability like a cheap mini with a Pico hung off the side.

Have some N100s ... great with Linux. N150, DID have to use the MX "AHD" distro however to cope with some of the newer hardware. That's my mini NAS now. Winders ? Won't Use It. Made SURE it didn't run for even a millisecond. A pride issue ! Nearest 'Winders' I have ... an XP virtual machine.

For the $120 you get only the board. Add case, power supply and mass storage and you probably easily get into the price range of NUC-like Mini-PCs, i.e. some $200.

Raspberry Pi OS, a Debian derivative, comes with Chromium and Firefox and can run quite a few applications. However using it as a everyday PC is missing the point. Conversely if you expect to grab a few Dupont wires and add a I2C temperature/humidity/barometer module and a couple of PWM controlled servos to your NUC mini-PC, good luck. Your best be would be to hang a Raspberry Pi Pico W off the USB port and program it separately.

Absolutely. I've been having fun with Pis of various flavours but
nothing currently beats my intel desktop or laptop...
...OTOH nothin beats my Zeros and Picos for what they are doing. Gadgets
and widgets
