Commercial Operators have removed that design criteria since back

Well no. The long haul routes are all BGP-ed to the hilt and multipath
between AS-es

Within AS maybe there are single routes, but they seldom use undersea links.

That's why outages happen nearly every day.

   Good old copper ! :-)

Hey, it works, is still mostly reliable. Easy to
run, easy to wire up, easy to splice.

Fiber is fast, but it's harder to physically deal with.
Also, it's still a 'mechanical' medium that can get
pulled down in storms and such and be a real bitch to
splice back together - or tap into.

Of late they parked in front of my house and proceeded
to pull about a literal mile of 6" copper cable out
through a manhole cover. The guy said it was 4000 pairs.
Took them all day and several trucks with giant reels
on them. The weight smashed the sidewalk.

My GUESS ... fiber will soon be used only to direct
connect local 'nodes' - with 5/6G transmitters at
each one. Home/biz will all become wireless. It's
cheapest for the corps, even if service sucks.

   5G rating, but like 2G delivery :-)

It's not going to be just "distant customers" within
a few years. Physical wire/fiber networks are EXPENSIVE.
You have to hire lots of trained HUMANS to deal with it.

I've got a couple of good ideas from people in
the group today. I'll mess with it and see.
The router menus are a bit cluttered, some
options a bit obscure, labeling a bit odd.
Still think the new unit is just more STUPID
than the older one. Industry trend is "Thou shalt
do it OUR WAY and NO OTHER WAY - We Always
   Know Best".

> Or, create your own Access Point.

I did that once some years ago. It was "ok" but
not great. Could likely be done with a Pi4/5 now.
Also, routers can - maybe need to be - 'complex'
   to handle all present/future issues. That's a
lot of programming. Despite all my years I still
   don't know every trick involved.

Did more recently use the "IPFIRE" (funny name !)
software router/firewall distro. It's Linux under
the hood, even wrote some set-up scripts in it.

It's relatively simple and straight-up, the GUI
is complete but not over-complex and you CAN
get SSH or direct connection to a command line.
There are other, more difficult, distros - but
that one fit the size/scale/scope I needed.

Ran it on an ultra-mini SuperMicro box ... only
about 8x8x2" big with JUST enough space for one
laptop HDD. Never failed me. Oh, the boards in
those things ... interfaces even I'd never come
across, funky industrial busses and such,
   hyper-flexible/all-purpose. Price was fair too.

I definitely have old copper for the landline. I'm surprised the ground

In UK fibre to the house is replacing all copper.,
Copper is simply shit past a few years old.

We are even scheduled to switch off all copper telephones in a few years
and go VOIP or mobile.

I can put up with my 80/20 Mbps copper until fibre reaches here (during
2026 according to BT) when I can have up to 1600/115 Mbps.

I'll probably plump for the 300/50 Mbps, to get a decent an upload
increase ...

Well I had 5Mbps down and 1 Mbps up till they put in domestic fibre.

Now it 30/10 which is enough for my current needs.

I think the connection will handle more than 100Mbps

Our POTS and ISDN phones have been gone for a decade, it's all VoIP
now. The majority of landlines carry Internet over DSL or the TV
copper cable. Fiber to the home has been coming slowly for a decade,
mostly in the places where DSL is inadequate. Our community got
vectoring VDSL in 2014 (maxing out at 250/40) and Internet over TV
Cable (maxing out a 1000/50) five years earlier and will probably be
the last to get Fiber. The speedpipes are already in the ground though
(they did that when the vectoring infrastructure was built).

I am not sure whether wireless internet for residentials is a good
idea. It took us most of the 1990ies to get rid of the shared medium
in our LANs, why are we reintroducing it for the uplink?

Greetings
Marc

Indeed.

But something we didn't have in the 1990s was a lush market of absolute
morons with cash to spend on StffThatJustWorks™ who couldn't even manage
to put an RJ45 plug in an RJ45 socket.

Wireless and WiFi is perfect for them, and if it's as insecure and slow
as parked car with the key in the wheel well, so what? They are told its
fantastic, and gullibility is their middle name.

Usually the wifi intrerface and wired ethernet interface would be
bridged together, with the bridge interface routed to whatever the
internet-facing interface is.

The GUI may, or may not, let you see that?

Alternatively the wifi interface may have a "client isolation" setting?

Been looking, a lot of semi-hidden or badly

Good stuff. I'll look for that crap tomorrow. Hard to
say HOW they've labeled it or WHERE they hid it, but
   it's probably in there somewhere.

Anyway, previous routers, 20 years back, this always
"just worked" and you never had to think about it.
If it's plugged into my 8-port hub I want to to be
accessible wired AND to the wifi units.

I made a mini-NAS ... the IDEA is to get data in and
out of it with minimal delay. COULD run it wi-fi but
that's TWO radio links instead of just one. Might be
some other ethernet devices may want to add on later too.

As a last resort, you could disable (or disregard) the router's own
wifi, and plug your own access point into one of the 8 ports.

Ummmmmmm ... need wifi AND the wired-in.

Both need to be in the same "universe"

I've got a couple of good suggestions in

   obscure it all.

They can be if used simply as 'bridges' - the main router then responds
to the DHCP requests from connected clients.

Didn't really SEE such options in the corporate router.
NO specific bridging stuff at all. Devices keep getting
   more STUPID.

It's gonna take me maybe a week to research and
explore what IS there. I'll make a post-note then.
LOTS of people use ATT ... so it's kind of My Duty
   to post fixes.

Meanwhile, BILLING ... depends on HOW I get to the
acct/payment pages. LOOKED good, credit balances,
until I somehow stumbled into some other area and
then I owed money. CONFUSING. Oh well, kinda over-
paid for now ... but this is NO LONGER easy. In
the end I may HAVE to go to another provider just
for some 'clarity'. I can afford it all, but ...

With 2FA *everywhere* the ONE acct I CANNOT lose
is my cell. That'd be a TOTAL disaster. This is
the fuckin' world we've made. Predict it's going
to end in disaster ... just wait .........

I can afford good lawyers too - megabuck and class
lawsuits may be necessary. The USA is kinda force
-vs- force ... who can do the most legal damage.

No option is corporate router needed.

It simply sees that half a dozen clients MAC addresses are coming down
the same wire. But Ethernet switches can cope with that - its just as if
you had a second switch connected.

Connect via wifi to the remote wireless pint, that uses ethernet to pass
the packets all over to the main router down the one piece of Ethernet.

I've got an old Netgear ADSL router doing it here. I simply switched off
DHCP and DSL and left the wifi going, plugged it in and it Just Works
