I suppose I could have done the equivalent of s/COMP-3/COMP-4/
in the text editor of the day, but that would have also changed
the fields that were not only legitimately COMP-3, but which
could not have been held in a COMP-4 variable.

Sometimes you just gotta Do the Right Thing, no matter

Did COBOL even HAVE real "types" ???

It was not really a "sophisticated" language.
It was MEANT mostly for biz/commercial apps,
esp financial and scheduling. It was GOOD at
that - except for being TOO ugly/confusing in
   the chase to be "simple/self-documenting".

   I don't hate COBOL - it HAD/HAS its place.
   However the real-world implementation could
   never live-up to "The Vision".

COBOL could/can be "improved" - made more
efficient. But NOBODY is gonna DO that
these days. As such COBOL kinda becomes
like 'Latin' - an unchanging 'dead' lang.
This MAY be a good thing.

COBOL was massively good at what it did, and what it still does.

Batch processing *enormous* quantities of data with a few small routines.

It was designed for and on machines with very small memories, initially
core store, but very large data sets stored on hard drives or tapes, and
is massively efficient at utilising that. 64k of RAM and a z80 was a
luxury for COBOL

Its ideas about data organisation led to the relational database. And
thence SQL and friends

A subject about which most people here know very little.

Analysing businesses and writing code to streamline their operations is
a different art to network programming. *All* the hard work is in the
analysis and initial data definitions and structures.

Back in the day the lowliest part of that process was the 'coder' who
simply turned the specs into clean COBOL ....:-)

Too short-sighted in its design: in its focus on what passed for
“business” needs in the early 1960s, it struggled to keep up with the
growing popularity of relational databases in the 1970s and 1980s. To
construct SQL queries, you really needed good dynamic string handling, and
COBOL explicitly eschewed all that. So SQL handling was always some kind
of bag on the side, rather than properly integrated into the language.

Ummmm ... I'd tend to say WELL-FOCUSED on its INTENDED
uses - at least as best they understood them in the
late 60s. "Net" - few even DREAMED.

And COBOL is STILL with us, just under the skin. Lots
of those 60s pgms writ by narrow-tie horn-rim-glasses
Dilberts STILL doing their thing. NOT dead at all.
I looked over the shoulder of my bank person while
they were fixing-up some shit recently - LOOK & FEEL
of a COBOL pgm, very "terminal", very biz focused.

And now few can AFFORD/DARE to re-write What Just
Works ... so COBOL will be around for another couple
of decades fer sure until/if "AI" gets REALLY good.

There's REALLY GOOD MONEY in maintaining/tweaking
existing COBOL apps BTW. I know a guy, kinda MADE
his retirement nest-egg that way ......

They are disappearing, one way or the other. Companies that are still
insisting on sticking to that legacy code gradually going out of business
or being acquired, and having that technical-debt-ridden stuff superseded
by more modern stuff from the parent company ...

Do you think PayPal, Ebay or TradeMe use COBOL code to manage their
financial transactions? Of course not.

How many government agencies, financial institution and so forth do you

Government? Again, diminishing. Because, you know, politicians keep
wanting to know why so many tax dollars are going into the increasing
costs of maintaining “legacy” systems.

Financial institutions? See above.

I've agreed with him though that like so many old
languages COBOL *will* eventually fade away. What
replaces it may or may not be "better" but there
just aren't many people willing/able to do COBOL
   anymore, so ....

There's always a psychology in the computer world
that immediately embraces the "Newest/Greatest Thing"
whether it's actually good/improved or not. Shit, I
remember when 'C' was in that category ... that one
   DID hang on :-)

There's a parallel thread here started by someone
who hates "Rust". It too is one of those "newest/
greatest things" so all the kiddies immediately
jumped on it. IMHO it looks like yet another
   pointless re-do of 'C', so use 'C', but that's
not how the newbies see it.

But the EXPENSE of translating/replacing all that
good old COBOL - that's a factor these days. The
USA/west had gobs of cash in the 60s ... but NOT
   so much now.

Oh, I gave him a wiki of computer langs, 99% of
which were flash-in-the-pan. I did note that it
FAILED to include BRAINFUCK - what a hideous
   oversight !!! :-)

Due to their audience, SOME langs are gonna hang on
for a LONG time still. FORTRAN is one of those.

Oh, the recent serious crap/attacks with M$ and
cloud apps probably do NOT encourage biz/govt to
be in such a hurry to replace their old in-house
   COBOL. It WORKS. :-)

A month or so ago I posted a news story that says
the US IRS is STILL using 1960s hardware/software
for a lot of its daily operations. Dunno WHO
maintains the hardware - they must get HUGE money.

you never push on a calculator !"

That's something that's puzzled me all of my life and on a wider scale
than computer languages. Why does Religion X survive while Religion Y,
which is equally as plausible/implausible become an also ran? Why does C
hand on while C++ never quite lived up to its promises? Why is Pike
completely off the map? It isn't that bad of a C-like language?

Some things live the AC vs. DC wars have valid technological answers.
Others like the i86 architecture seem more like accidents at a point in
time.

If you manage to convert the ruler of an empire to your religion, then he
can make his subjects follow suit. Or sometimes the religious ideology
itself serves as a unifying force to mobilize the people to dominate their
less organized neighbours.

Astute politics can work in many ways. When the Catholic missionaries went
into Ireland and encountered the panoply of local deities, they renamed
various of them into “saints”. And suddenly the local believers in those
deities were no longer “pagans”, it turned out they were Christians all
along.

I guess it came down to: Intel’s CPU chips had fewer pins on them,
compared to Motorola’s. That was a major factor in the cost. And when the
marketing behemoth of the time, IBM, made its decision, that clinched it.

That works. Aethelbehrt married a little French hottie to cement the
relationship with the Franks. She was a Christian and Aethelbehrt
converting may have something to do with getting her in bed. All downhill
from there.

The conversion of the Saxons by Karl der Grosse wasn't as pleasant.

I had more limited offshoots in mind. The Second Great Awakening in the US
spawned a number of Christian variants. Some survived as minor branches
like the Seventh Say Adventists while the Latter Day Saints movement was
much more successful. More recently you have Scientology.

Russell's 'The Germanization of Early Medieval Christianity' covers that
well. The 'Heliand' was a rewrite od the synoptics to make it more
palatable to the Saxons. Jesus was the leader of a war band who went to
the hill fort of Jerusalem. Others weren't so gentle.

Boniface's last attempt to convert the Frisians didn't work too well and
he joined the rank of martyrs.

Damn good question. I can answer for C and c++ personally, in that the
investment in time and effort to learn C++ and be fluent at it was
simply not worth it, whereas with C back in 1983 it was the other way
about. a huge increase in productivity for the simple expedient of
reading and digesting K &R which was not a big book at all.
I have MASSIVE books to describe out of date Jasvascript and C++ ...

Stroustrup joked that C+++ would increase employment of programmers.

I also briefly was paid to port FORTH to an 8086 board. Not a PC, a part
of a minicomputer. I was impressed by how small it was, but utterly
unimpressed by how you were supposed to document it.
LISP - Lots of Irrelevant Superfluous Parentheses is simply a
theoretical language I never saw the point of. Same with Prolog.
Pascal was impractical in an engineering context as it didn't envisage
real world I/O. Too formal and academic
Modula 2 was Pascal on steroids. Designed to write bug proof code. Well
anyone can do that...
printf("hello world"); That's bug proof. Just wont fly an F35
I had a girl friend who did COBOL back in the day. I liked it. Burt
financial programming want my 'thing'
I did FORTRAN,. Well its pretty much a better form of BASIC. Good
languages for non computer people.

I learnt PHP because it was the de facto open source code to run active
websites. I learnt SQL and in particular mySQL because they were again
the de facto choice . I learn JavaScript because it is the only language
that runs in peoples browsers, and if you ant a smart web app there is
no other real choice.

I hate it. It really is the most utter and complete shit. So shit they
had to write json to cover up the mess.

But is here to stay because it was there, like MSDOS, at a time when we
needed a standard, and like MSDOS it too is a pile of crap.

This suggests to me that there are two factors that make for a languages
success.
1/. It aptly fills a niche really well.
or
2/. It is the only language in town, and people learn how to avoid the
worts of its egregiousness.

Wait, what? Where’s your error checking? What if your printf fails?

Actually that’s one of the things I like least about C. It leaves all error
checking up to the programmer instead of having even a minimal handler for
errors not otherwise caught.

The whole context of 'C' was that COMPETENT PROGRAMMERS
existed and could/would assess error conditions as THEY
   chose to do so.

No 'nanny' stuff. If you write stuff that will nuke
all memory then all memory, or worse, will be nuked.

More modern langs, you don't even get the options/ops
to handle a lot of this stuff intelligently.

The reality of C is that even competent programmers find this
very difficult and often make elementary mistakes with potentially
serious consequences, as we see on a daily basis.

I went from DEC20 FORTRAN to pdp11 Basic (it had matrix math) to DEC SAIL
(Algol) to Pascal to C to Python

Assembler and COBOL were needed but avoided
