I've enjoyed reading several authors who have series with many books, for example Mackey Chandler's 14 book April series. https://www.amazon.com/April-series/dp/B074C3X2NZ This isn't anything new. Zane Grey, Frederick Faust (Max Brand), Edgar Rice Burroughs, and even Sue Grafton wrote many books with common characters and themes that were somewhat formulaic. Definitely not great literature but enjoyable if you like the genre. I don't think it's far fetched for Andy Author to create a template of sorts, lean back, and say 'Claude, crank out another one.' I suppose on the bright side George Martin might finish what he started if the TV series didn't override whatever he planned to do.

Hey, this means CSI:NY can now be produced on a leaner budget: offload script writing to GenAI. I mean, stuff like assuming all of the world uses Fahrenheit, or suggesting "GUI Interfaces in Visual Basic" to "track" IP addresses sounds something that'd be right up GenAI's alley. -- Nuno Silva Hopefully these GenAIs haven't been trained on the Star Wars Holiday Special...

There's one Scorpion episode (ought to be season 2 episode 7, from the list on Wikipedia? [1]) which stands out, as they spend a big chunk of the episode trying to stop a runaway subway train *powered by third-rail electrification*. No reason is given for this, it's as if it didn't occur to anyone in cast or crew that the train needs power to run. And it's not a Speed-like plot, no. IIRC there's *no reason* given not to cut the power. I mean, there'll be handwaving in TV shows, but I'd argue this one just looks stupid. Looking at my notes, I've written that, regarding Robert Patrick, Scorpion sometimes feels a bit like it's John Dogget plus The Lone Gunmen. -- Nuno Silva

The effect goes back to the very earliest chatbots, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA_effect. The tendency to trust information that came out a computer over information from a human, or sometimes even the evidence of one’s own sense, has been visible for a long time too. > Deeply baffling; gonna be real interesting to see the psych field try > to break it down once the dust has settled from the impending > collapse. It’s worth analyzing the effect rather than being baffled by it: I suspect it reveals something about human psychology and the way humans interact. -- https://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/

You could reference the ‘actual documentation’ rather than copy-pasting the LLM output, which based on experience simply cannot be trusted. A while ago I asked one to define some concepts in my field of work, it got the answers wrong. Slightly subtly wrong: if you didn’t know the answers already you would probably miss the error. A colleague used one to set some questions for an informal quiz. It got the sample answers wrong. Harmless in context apart from the colleague looking silly, but still makes the point that the technology is fundamentally ureliable. On a mailing list I follow someone recently used an LLM to summarize the key and signature sizes of a collection of cryptographic schemes. It couldn’t even copy a few numbers from the specs reliably. There are many other well-known examlpe of LLMs generating bullshit and, regrettably, of humans accepting it without question. An example of the Gell-Mann Amnesia <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Gell-Mann_Amnesia_effect> effect at work: Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect works as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward-reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story-and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read with renewed interest as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about far-off Palestine than it was about the story you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know. Only difference in this case is it is an LLM presenting the incorrect facts with an air of authority instead of a newspaper/journalist.

Just not my words. There’s a rather suspicious bit of logic in it, in that it relies on what is in the rpm documentation rather than what actually works, which is not necessarily the same thing. A few minutes research shows that the two have not historically been aligned in this case: the documentation was added after the functionality was well-established. So I don’t think you can have checked the LLM-generated text you posted, you’re just blindly trusting it. -- https://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/
