Today's LLMs are known to hallucinate and they even document that.

Many AI users act like they’re in some kind of high-dependency
relationship--toxic, even. One symptom is that they get quite offended

What worries me about AI is not being able to detect it. I've enjoyed
reading several authors who have series with many books, for example
Mackey Chandler's 14 book April series.

https://www.amazon.com/April-series/dp/B074C3X2NZ

This isn't anything new. Zane Grey, Frederick Faust (Max Brand), Edgar
Rice Burroughs, and even Sue Grafton wrote many books with common
characters and themes that were somewhat formulaic. Definitely not great
literature but enjoyable if you like the genre.

I don't think it's far fetched for Andy Author to create a template of
sorts, lean back, and say 'Claude, crank out another one.'

I suppose on the bright side George Martin might finish what he started if
the TV series didn't override whatever he planned to do.

Hey, this means CSI:NY can now be produced on a leaner budget: offload
script writing to GenAI.

I mean, stuff like assuming all of the world uses Fahrenheit, or
suggesting "GUI Interfaces in Visual Basic" to "track" IP addresses
sounds something that'd be right up GenAI's alley.

There are some very concerned screen writers :) The series 'Scorpion' was
fun in a mindless way but I could visualize the writers' meeting.

1. We need some incredibly complex technical problem that may result in a
disaster.

2. We need an incredibly complex solution dreamed up by the team of
geniuses.

3. We need a reason why the the complex solution fails with minutes, if
not seconds, on the clock.

4. We need a MacGyver to save the world yet again.

5. As filler, we can have interactions from the team, all of whom are on
the spectrum except the waitress and the Robert Patrick character.

It writes itself and Claude should be up to the task.

There's one Scorpion episode (ought to be season 2 episode 7, from the
list on Wikipedia? [1]) which stands out, as they spend a big chunk of
the episode trying to stop a runaway subway train *powered by third-rail
electrification*.

No reason is given for this, it's as if it didn't occur to anyone in
cast or crew that the train needs power to run. And it's not a
Speed-like plot, no. IIRC there's *no reason* given not to cut the
power.

I mean, there'll be handwaving in TV shows, but I'd argue this one just
looks stupid.

Looking at my notes, I've written that, regarding Robert Patrick,
Scorpion sometimes feels a bit like it's John Dogget plus The Lone
Gunmen.

The tech sector has always been weirdly prone to partisan tribalism re:
companies/organizations/standards or even specific pieces of software
that will never love anyone back, but the chatbots really do seem to
worm their way extra-deep into the psyche of "AI" boosters even by that
standard - a cocktail of the human tendency for anthropmorphism, post-
purchase rationalization (note how often it's the people who pay for it
arguing that you can't *really* judge it based on any of the free
options,) and a certain subconscious desire-to-be-fooled, I s'pect.

Deeply baffling; gonna be real interesting to see the psych field try
to break it down once the dust has settled from the impending collapse.

The effect goes back to the very earliest chatbots, e.g.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA_effect. The tendency to trust
information that came out a computer over information from a human, or
sometimes even the evidence of one’s own sense, has been visible for a
long time too.

> Deeply baffling; gonna be real interesting to see the psych field try

It’s worth analyzing the effect rather than being baffled by it: I
suspect it reveals something about human psychology and the way humans
interact.

I’m not sure what you’re saying ‘nope’ to here, you have made clear
multiple times that you’re ignoring humans.

You could reference the ‘actual documentation’ rather than copy-pasting
the LLM output, which based on experience simply cannot be trusted.

A while ago I asked one to define some concepts in my field of work, it
got the answers wrong. Slightly subtly wrong: if you didn’t know the
answers already you would probably miss the error.

A colleague used one to set some questions for an informal quiz. It got
the sample answers wrong. Harmless in context apart from the colleague
looking silly, but still makes the point that the technology is
fundamentally ureliable.

On a mailing list I follow someone recently used an LLM to summarize the
key and signature sizes of a collection of cryptographic schemes. It
couldn’t even copy a few numbers from the specs reliably.

There are many other well-known examlpe of LLMs generating bullshit and,
regrettably, of humans accepting it without question.

If you are relying on these things then you are building on sand.

You don't need an LLM for that.

Most civilizations and societies are indeed constructed thus.

All that matters is sex and babies and you don't need a lot of smarts
for that.

An example of the Gell-Mann Amnesia
<https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Gell-Mann_Amnesia_effect> effect at
work:

Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect works as follows. You
open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In
Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the
article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of
either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it
actually presents the story backward-reversing cause and effect. I
call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of
them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the
multiple errors in a story-and then turn the page to national or
international affairs, and read with renewed interest as if the rest
of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about far-off Palestine
than it was about the story you just read. You turn the page, and
   forget what you know.

Only difference in this case is it is an LLM presenting the incorrect
facts with an air of authority instead of a newspaper/journalist.

But if you are copying here the output of the LLM instead of writing in
your words from reading the actual documentation, you haven't used the
LLM *merely* for searching?

I don't care, the information I posted is correct. Just not my words.

There’s a rather suspicious bit of logic in it, in that it relies on
what is in the rpm documentation rather than what actually works, which
is not necessarily the same thing. A few minutes research shows that the
two have not historically been aligned in this case: the documentation
was added after the functionality was well-established.

So I don’t think you can have checked the LLM-generated text you posted,
you’re just blindly trusting it.

If the documentation at some point did not mention the feature, that
distro was thought to not have the feature.

I am on X11 in the VM. You have a lot more yasr2 stuff than I got with
'sudo zypper install yast2'. Myrlyn shows all the additional packages but
I'm not interested enough to figure out what else zypper should have
pulled. It did get a lot of ruby 3.4 stuff.
