other than dmesg | grep ttys, what else can help me find how
a modem is connected?

Suppose ACM2. You might need to setup an UDEV rule too.

What is the exact name of that modem?

the UDEVADM is something I need to learn more about, it seems

*+-What is the exact name of that modem?
Two modems

Filemate on Quantian (bus1 Dev 2) - THis machine had worked for years with
a USR modem, but when that died, the new mode never worked with
Linux(Quantian Knoppix Debian) but the Windows grub partn works fien.
It shows up as COM3 on Hyperterm but the USR was COM5. When this problem
appeared I was told here it was WinModem, but there is a Qn util to detect
winmodems and it says it's not. Also a web site says it's not.

Connexant on Linpus/Fedora (bus3 dev2). THis was purchased as a modem that's
supposed to work on Linux.

IIRC Connexant needs special software to work. USR made a nice USB
modem that works well with Linux, used it for years when visiting my
folks in Florida, think it was USR5673. You might be able to find a
used one on EBAY or Amazon.
