Certainly. The question is why after decades of use C libraries can be
hard to find and difficult to use. In Python
url = f"https://api.weather.gov/points/{latitude},{longitude}"
response = requests.get(url).json()
gets the job done merely by importing requests. In C you might use
libcurk.
https://curl.se/libcurl/c/libcurl-tutorial.html
Note that is the 'easy' interface. I've never used libcurl. I use the
OpenSSL library to open a socket and build the headers. It's easier.
The ironic thing is many of the Python libraries are written in C but they
achieve a level of abstraction C itself never did.

(At the time, ARM development systems tended to have no compiler support except for C, so C was compulsory.) It cut my development time in half. The catch was that the C code was hard to read. Lots of reliance on macros, and the converter deleted all comments. In the end I had to go back to writing in C directly, for the sake of having self-documenting code. -- Peter Moylan peter@pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org Newcastle, NSW

The very best was TopSpeed. At some stage -- sorry, I've forgotten the date -- a group of Borland employees wanted to develop a Modula-2 compiler, but the Borland management blocked this proposal. The proposers then left Borland and formed a new company with a product called TopSpeed. This might have been the beginning of the end for Borland, which lost its best developers. The TopSpeed compiler took the notion of modularity seriously, and obviously had nicely separated front ends and back ends. The front end supported four languages: C, C++, Pascal, Modula-2 and 8086 assembly language. (Sorry, that's five.) It was easy to do mixed-language programming, which I personally needed to write threaded applications under MS-DOS. The pragma system was brilliant, allowing where necessary (on a per-procedure basis) to specify which registers were used for which parameters. In a couple of cases I used this to write functions that compiled to zero-length machine code. The back end did a good job of optimisation, and included a smart linker that deleted library functions that were never called. The death of MS-DOS meant the death of TopSpeed, but it was good while it lasted. -- Peter Moylan peter@pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org Newcastle, NSW

On the PDP-11 it was sometimes desirable and sometimes not, because of the situation of having a smaller address space than the size of real memory. If your program was close to the 16-bit address space limit you only wanted the things you used linked in; if the system as a whole was short of memory using shared libraries was better. >I suppose there's an extent to which you need to be certain that a >function won't *ever* be invoked, but it's not like we haven't had >call graph analysis for aeons; take the worst-case what-if graph and >strip out everything that isn't on it, and presto. As you’d expect the current link time optimization, -flto, of GCC does it at higher optimization levels. Complicating this is that on ELF platforms there’s no way to be certain a DLL loaded by the program won’t call a function in the main program; Windows and macOS require that the functions exported be explicitly marked as such, which makes it more practical. -- ‘As I sat looking up at the Guinness ad, I could never figure out / How your man stayed up on the surfboard after fourteen pints of stout’ (C. As it stands the Linux linker can skip object files that aren’t required, but not individual functions that aren’t required. Removing unnecessary functions from compiled object code _at link time_ is harder than it sounds, and in general surely impossible. The reachability information known to the compiler is gone; in fact it may never have existed in the first place, for object files that correspond to hand-written assembler or were generated directly. Hypothetically the linker could disassemble each object file to determine the reachability of each instruction. But if it encounters a computed jump or call, it would have to figure out all the possible results of the computation to work out what was reachable from that instruction. If the linker nevertheless somehow succeeds in identifying which parts of an object file are reachable and which are not, when it removes the non-reachable parts, it must rewrite any computed or relative addressing in the surviving parts. For a simple relative branch across a chunk of removed code this doesn’t sound hard but for a computed address, it’s basically not possible. (GCC’s object code doesn’t have branch offsets baked into object files, it leave a relocation record, but object code from other origins might not be so friendly.) As someone else mentioned the real-life solution to all this is LTO, where the “object” files really container the compiler’s intermediate representation, allowing optimization to operate at the whole-program level, potentially omitting not just unreachable functions but also reachable ones, if they can be inlined into all their callers. -- https://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/

Dosen't the shared library concept work against some pruning? MSDOS wasn't much of a multitasking OS, and didn't really need DLLs, but NT and everything after has one library supporting multiple jobs, not just multiple threads. /dps -- The presence of this syntax results from the fact that SQLite is really a Tcl extension that has escaped into the wild. <http://www.sqlite.org/lang_expr.html>

What is an operating system, after all, but a very large shared runtime library? As always you trade off one Good Thing for the sake of Another Good Thong And the solution you arricve at depends on te relative weight attached to the Things and their Goodness. We no longer operate and an era of restricted memory or disk - or indeed compute power. But we absolutely do operate in an era where the complexity and security of code and its ability to be maintained is a serious cost In my lifetime things have transitioned from 'how much functionality can I squeeze out of 8 registers, a 2MHz clock and 16k or RAM' to 'How can I construct an application that I myself, let alone someone else, can understand fast enough to fix the inevitable bug I missed or did not foresee?' Given the availability 0f 6 core 3 GHz processors and 32Gbyte of RAM etc/// Like the recent discussion on swap files: the partition protagonists assumptions have ceased to be valid with the advent of SSDs with zero seek times and CPU speed well exceeding the read/write bandwidth of the storage devices. Today, the acme of code design is surely comprehensibility and ease of maintenance. I think that accounts for my dislike of object orientation in that it obfuscates program logic behind idealised structures that can be made counter intuitive And perhaps hides the hardware just a little too much to be optimal. > /dps > -- WOKE is an acronym... Less code is better than more code for this (assuming the same functionality is implemented). There’s still a need to be aware of the time complexity of one’s algorithmic choices, since the amount of data the user may be interested in processing equally has gone up. That’s a couple of things that haven’t changed. > I think that accounts for my dislike of object orientation in that it > obfuscates program logic behind idealised structures that can be made > counter intuitive > > And perhaps hides the hardware just a little too much to be optimal. I think Simon Tatham comments somewhere that the right computer language paradigm is multi-paradigm. Sometimes OO can be helpful, but it’s certainly not a panacea. -- ‘As I sat looking up at the Guinness ad, I could never figure out / How your man stayed up on the surfboard after fourteen pints of stout’ (C.
