#69272 — M$ Drops "Authenticator" App - Millions Freaked

SubjectM$ Drops "Authenticator" App - Millions Freaked
Message-ID<9gednXsszvK_VPn1nZ2dnZfqnPadnZ2d@giganews.com>
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-14865891/Microsoft-Authenticator-app-axed.html

Microsoft is shutting down an essential feature in an app that
is used by millions to log into accounts.

The tech giant announced this week that users will no longer
be able to store passwords in its Authenticator app, which
is an extra layer of security for accounts that generates
one-time passwords.

Around 75 million people use the app to store their credentials,
but Microsoft will start deleting the codes starting in August.

This will impact users of Microsoft services like Outlook,
Excel, and those using Android and iOS smartphones.

. . .

Let me guess ... M$ had exactly ONE old guy who
knew how the app worked - and he quit or retired
or dropped dead in the break room.

Win-2k ... there was ONE old guy who could hold
the entire system and interactions in his head.
Then he was gone. From XP on we saw endless bloat
and complication and weird errors ... and that
   gave us Vista and worse.

Linux is a BIT better in this respect, although
we do see certain utilities that get depreciated
as their sole maintainers drop out. We all seem
to rely on a small inventory of 'geniuses' ...

Misleading headline from the Mail, Authenticator is not being dropped,
it'll continue for its main purpose as MFA, the app has had on-screen
warnings for ages about password functionality going away

If you want The Dirt first, DM is pretty
good at that. It's only sort-of a "news"
site however, tons of celeb gossip and
it does have a talent for hype. On the
plus it updates frequently, unlike a lot
   of supposed 'real' news sites.

'Authenticator' is not entirely going away,
but many (most?) USE it for the disappearing
password functionality so it may as well be
   entirely gone.

I see M$ announced 9000 new job cuts today ...
   the AI is to blame.

Still seen NO plans for dealing with
all the humans obsoleted by 'AI' ...

The Tabloid Press is unashamedly partisan, shouty, mostly bullshit, and
occasionally enjoyable.

I read the DE not for news, but to get an idea about what story is
paying the DE to promote today, and for a quick overview of what the
'plebs' are being told to think.

Of course, they don't, and the comments in there are far better written
than the articles.

For news, you need to dig deeper in more recondite places...

I find DM reasonably 'enjoyable' - a sort of 'variety
magazine' plugged in to the mainstream culture. From
time to time it DOES post good sci/tech stuff.

As for "partisan" - DM is Brit, and I don't really
know or get Brit political parties or the partisan
canon that go with them. To the US reader it seems
   relatively non-partisan.

The best US news doesn't come from the USA - it's
all too biased. As nobody else 'gets' the USA their
news about us tends to be Just The Facts.

Maybe, maybe not. In my country, most media are right side shifted, so
the majority of news are right shifted. Maybe the truth is in fact left
side.

It is not that easy...

A very dangerous assumption.

I try to go wide enough so that's kind of
   impossible. Several Euro, African, Asian,
S.American news sites. No "They" own them all.

On the flip, I do understand the diff between
   "consumer politics" and Machiavellian realpolitik.
Always have to bear that in mind.

In short, IT AIN'T EASY THESE DAYS.

"Real" is more plastic than ever. Add more 'AI'
   and it becomes even worse.

LONG LONG back I coined the term "Dali-Ocracy" ...
a seeming reality where you can never be quite
sure of what's actually real. The question is
how long any sort of societies can persist if
dealing with nothing but the surreal.

Exactly. Game theory favours a psychopath in a nation of trustworthy
people, but if everyone is psycho, the country tears itself apart.

In Russia there is no truth, Only what must be believed. And that falls
apart on contact with reality.

Won't stop people from being blindsided by it, no doubt - but ye gods,
if you're trusting MS with your passwords that's your first mistake
right there. I mean, they don't even guarantee backup of your O365
instance when you're *paying* them for it...!

(And WinAuth is a perfectly satisfactory substitute for Authenticator
in its primary role, thankfully; have never needed the name brand.)

Besides, haven't we been paying attention to Satya's messianic dog-and-
pony show? Products and services are irrelevant! Chatbots are the

Remember his first slogan after taking over from The Sweaty One was
“Mobile First, Cloud First”. Or was it “Cloud First, Mobile First”? I
can’t remember now, which “First” was firster.

Deprecated = not recommended
Depreciated = fallen in value.

Someone should tell the Town council that 'prescirbed' means indicated
as to be used and 'proscribed' means forbidden. The next time they issue
a parking ticket for 'parking in a prescribed place'.

   Followed soon by "deceased".

Hey, dialects vary ... don't be an '-ist' :-)

Not much 'forsooth'-ing these days anymore either.

With the rise of China we'll have to start adding
