These filesystems are fully compatible/interchangable with filesystems generated by Mksquashfs 4.x and are mountable on 2.6.29 and later kernels." At a guess then, a kernel from the 2.6.29 era would also support squashfs3. That came out about a decade ago. BTW, why not just boot the old Mepis image you have? It certainly has the tools for accessing the files you're interested in.
