I heard a first-hand account from a friend who had been in the
Israeli military at a time when programmers were required by
policy to submit even short programs to the VAX's batch queue to
compile in order to preserve interactive response for editing.
One soldier was stationed at a terminal watching for violators.
My friend who said he would send an escape sequence in a message
to the watcher's terminal that would lock up that terminal. By
the time the watcher got the terminal unlocked, my friends
program would have finished compiling, and my friend could go
home.
