At this point there are only really three operating systems in use amoungst
consumer equipment: MS-Windows, Linux, and *BSD. And since Linux and *BSD are
fully (or nearly so) Posix and are effectively 'UNIX' (for any meaningful
meaning of the term), it really breaks down to two operating systems: UNIX (of
two main flavors) and MS-Windows. All else is 'window dressing' (eg a 'thin'
'veneer' of user interface). Once you get 'under the hood' the guts are
pretty much the same, from many points of view (yes, the details of the *BSD
kernel and the Linux kernel are quite different, but that is something of a
veneer at the opposite side, at it were). Almost all ARM based appliances (eg
routers, etc.) run some sort of Linux (even if only a BusyBox based distro).

The only other O/S's out there, mostly for servers on non-'PC' (eg Intel/AMD
x86-ish) hardware, are highly specialized or are in fact also some flavor of
UNIX (or else are UNIX-like at this point): AIX (IBM minis), OS/390 (IBM
mainframe), OpenVMS (HP on Itainium), AUX (HP on HP-US), IRIX (SGI on MIPS),
SunOS/Solaris (Sun/Oracle on Sparc), etc. I believe Linux runs on all of
these processor types.
