To deal with Google's algorithm I would have to establish a series of dummy web pages that linked to my web page, and I understand that is what many sites actually do. But that is not the purpose of web search. A search for content "X" should return all web sites that deal with content "X" and not just the few that may have attained widespread linking. Apparently Google does not do this, although it seems that Bing and DuckDuckGo do (although this needs much more study). It all reduces to the basic conundrum: How are other sites going to ever link to my site if they can't even find it in the first place? There may also be another factor. Most independent web sites today are not actually "independent." Rather they are hosted by WordPress, GitHub, and other organizations that are directly linked to Google. In contrast, I finance my own site and I am not "owned" by anyone. Thus, in Google's eyes I may just be insignificant dust in the wind. But Google is still the main portal for search and may be forever. People will always converge on the perceived "winner" and ignore all else. -- Systemd: solving all the problems that you never knew you had.
