Okay, we old guys posting do not have much support around. I suppose that was in my mind when I read this obituary in yesterday's NY Times -- Heisuke Hironaka, 94, Fields Medalist and Smoother of Math's Singularities He died on March 18. There's 20 column inches of achievements, honors, etc., before getting to: The people he is 'survived by' includes (of his own generation) his wife, four sisters, and two brothers. The text leaves me unsure, but I think that he was pre-deceased by one of his three children. I've read before that studies of historical records generally show that 'genetics' does not play much role in living to old ages. This looks like a family whose DNA might give clues to the opposite conclusion. I do not recall hearing before of a 94-year old leaving behind six siblings. -- Rich Ulrich
