Yeah, even back in the 'by hook or crook' days. I will qualify: in North 
America. 'There are millions of acres of trees. We can't possibly cut them 
all.'  The history of forestry in the US is, starting on the east coast, 
cut everything down and when you run out of usable species move west.

The first victims in upstate NY were the hemlocks. Spud the bark off for 
the tanneries and leave the rest to rot. It wasn't before they ran out of 
other species that they figured out how to pulp hemlock.
