The Pilgrim experience in Leiden suggests they were rich. The Virginia Company was organized by the rich though I don't know how many of the wealthy went to the colony. Between Indian massacres, starvation, and a mysterious disappearance of an entire colony it wasn't a great place to live. Jamestown was a swamp for example. Tobacco finally became the cash crop. The Virginia culture was quite a bit different than Massachusetts. Virginia was associated with the Cavaliers.
