  This only worked once - can't remember all details, but somehow
  git started to show me my files with a "D" for "deleted".

  To reliably get my files back, what seems to work is:

"%GIT_EXE%" archive ... >archive.tar

  . It sounds as if checking out can be dangerous when git
  deems your files to be deleted and then synchronizes your
  working directory with this state . . .
