Try to open a terminal and start Calibre there. You might print something which names the cause for the hanging. Search for that in a search engine. If no luck, may be others can help here. Or try another reader. May be <https://itsfoss.com/best-ebook-readers-linux/> helps. Don't use ocular, as it's a KDE app and might want to install half of the KDE environment. -- Andreas
