Cliffhangers are due to the delusion that all of Hollywood seems to operate under that unless you are left wondering "what happens next" just at the start of the summer break that the result is you'll forget about the show when it returns next fall and not 'tune in' to watch it again. And, the trope works to some extent, which is why nearly all shows pull it at the end of each season now.
