I interpret you to be saying that you think you properly configured the 
CMOS 1st, 2nd, and 3rd boot devices to be USB, disabled, disabled.

That does not compute. Even if you had misconfigured the USB so that it 
  wasn't properly configured to be a bood device or some other USB 
mistake (which is very common), then the XP shouldn't have booted either 
because the CMOS is not configured to even look for a boot sector on any 
hdd/s.
