Use "rm".  Unless you are hiding state secrets or the accounts for a 
drug empire, it is good enough for most purposes.  It is very hard to 
"undelete" files on ext3 or ext4 - so you can be confident that no one 
is going to do it without extremely good reason.

If you really want to keep things safe from your paranoid delusions, use 
an encrypted file system.  "Shred" your files by forgetting the password.
