I just wanted clarification regarding Hadron's post. He's made it quite clear that he just felt like calling Marti an idiot because he felt like it and the fact that the comment was made right after a post from Marti that had a fair number of links supporting it (regardless of any of Marti's previous posts that may or may not have been supported) was just coincidence. Furthermore, Hadron apparently specifically reserves the right to agree with Marti on the topic of Bill Gates and overpopulation solutions, since Hadron's reply to me appeared to indicate that he didn't call him an idiot as a direct response to Marti's post and links. It seemed at first that Hadron was in full support of Bill Gates' view of overpopulation and eugenics, given the strong and concise wording of Hadron's insult to Marti. Hadron seems to have cleared that up by implying that the insult was something of which he had an uncontrollable urge to post and had nothing at all to do with the topic. He just had a compulsive desire to insult Marti, and had to say it since he apparently has difficulty with controlling his impulsive condescension. And if that's the case, those facts satisfy my questions of clarification. It's quite fallacious to state that my questions to Hadron asking for clarification of his response to Marti regarding the posted topic (Bill Gates, population control, and eugenics) are equivalent to a blanket endorsement of everything Marti has ever posted (which your comment appears to attempt to make), and it puzzles me why you would even try to make such a false connection. Also, my statement above should not be construed to mean a blanket rejection of everything Marti has ever posted, either. As is the case with most posters here, I agree with some of what is said by others, and I disagree with some of what is said by others.

That's some pretty slick fine tooth combing there Old Friend. You expect anybody outside yourself to understand such nuances? You like challenges I see. Explains your choice of OS: Linux. Why not forget the soap opera and go with something easy to install and use, like Windows? Unless you enjoy working on your PC to keep it running, aka hobbyware, aka Linux. RL

It is not always successful, but I find that making the attempts decreases the chance that someone will spin my comments the wrong way and simply criticize how verbose the posts are. > > You like challenges I see. Explains your choice of OS: Linux. Ladies and Gentlemen, I introduce to you RayLopez, Master goal-post-moving foreman. Lubuntu has never been a challenge for me. It, and the applications that run on it, fulfill every computing function I require. > Why not forget the soap opera The original topic was BMGF donating to a vaccine agency, which raised concerns about Bill Gates and his views on overpopulation and eugenics. If you agree with Gates' views (as shown in some of the links Marti posted as evidence), that is your choice and decision. > and go with something easy to install and > use, like Windows? Unless you enjoy working on your PC to keep it > running, aka hobbyware, aka Linux. I find Lubuntu easier to use than Windows. If I am ever forced to use Windows at the college, I would do so, and I trust that I would still be effective and productive. But if I am already using Lubuntu on my personal netbook and being productive, and if the college has no issue with me using the software I'm using to perform the duties of my job, why should I change to a product that has no discernible advantages for me and at least two major disadvantages? Are my students going to absorb the material from a presentation better merely because it was completed in Powerpoint instead of Impress? Will my students have higher scores on their tests only because I type the tests out in Word instead of Writer? Are they going to appreciate the music better simply because it's being played in Windows Media Player instead of VLC? I highly doubt it.

None, because they're provided with .pdf files of the text (online or offline) if they ask. In class, my presentations are filled with music and video examples, and Impress has no problems with any of my media files. The students have a data DVD that includes all of the music they listen to in class and additional music that they are required to listen to. For students who are unable to access the DVD because of older equipment (no DVD readers, for example), I provide audio CDs of the music and data CDs of the videos. While I haven't been asked yet, I would gladly create video DVDs of the movies and music videos for people to play on their DVD players if it were necessary for them to access the material. See, I don't FORCE my students to use any one particular solution, although I know for a fact that VLC plays everything I require my students to watch and to listen to. You would prefer that I require my students to all use one proprietary solution. That is completely unacceptable to me. I prefer to give my students as many options as is practical. >> Will my >> students have higher scores on their tests only because I type the >> tests out in Word instead of Writer? > > Again, yes. They can share Word collaboratively for one thing, not to > mention avoiding having to kill trees as now happens by printing out > stuff from Writer. You mean they have more opportunities to cheat by sharing answers online? No, thanks. I prefer printing my exams (3 different ones given randomly to the students so they can't easily copy from someone else) on post-consumer recycled paper, except for the one exam which is done in a game show format (in essence, a different oral exam given individually to each student in front of the entire class), in which I use an Impress presentation to great effect. I'd be interested to see the carbon footprint of an interactive test being given on a computer (which would have to include at the very least the electricity usage of the server computer, the client computer, and the network intermediaries, along with the computer time necessary for the teacher to grade, comment, and record progress) versus 21 sheets of post- consumer recycled paper printed out and the exams being taken without access to a computer. In any case, you recommend a solution that INCREASES the possibility that students would cheat, and that is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable. >> Are they going to appreciate the music better simply because it's being >> played in Windows Media Player instead of VLC? I highly doubt it. > > That would be hell yes. Media Player is world class, and even I know > that, and I'm not into music. So you are claiming that the same exact .flac music file (one of the better codecs, since the compression is lossless) or the same exact .wav file will sound *better* played in WMP than in VLC? Can you support that claim with scientific evidence? In my brief experience with WMP, it is an *extremely* limited player with horrible codec support. I'd recommend students use QuickTime Player long before I would recommend WMP.

Runs flawlessly on a 10 years old Athlon/Pentium 4, 1.x Ghz CPU, 512 MiB RAM and a legacy Nvidia Gefroce 2 (64 MiB VRAM) (or comparable AMD/ATi) GPU. In contrast to Gnome (and some extend KDE4) ex-Windows users will feel right "at home" in LXDE. It looks and feels like Windows 9x, yet with some Vista like eye candy. The rest of its benefits are obvious: Secure, stable, reliable, fantastic package management system and great, friendly and fast support via Ubuntu Forums. >> Why not forget the soap opera > > The original topic was BMGF donating to a vaccine agency, which raised > concerns about Bill Gates and his views on overpopulation and eugenics.
