Hi group,

Posted a stupid Linux tip... If you like piping long directories to
less but want to see the ls --color=auto still working in the less

Done.
(but I still think you should do something like that)

For grins, I tried "ls -al -color | less -R" on my Mac, which I thought should work,
but it didn't.

Yeah, I tend to write scripts on Linux first and then think about how to
port them to the Mac. When it comes to BASH, I prefer Linux. The default
BASH shell on the Mac is out of date as well. You can use brew to get a
later version of the shell. Since I do very little on the Mac other than
Adobe I don't put a lot of effort into it these days. Linux is just
easier, for me.

No doubt if your focus is on the CLI then Linux is second to none.

On the Mac, it's "-color". This is the problem with the Mac. What you
write in Linux won't just work in the Mac. You have to do a bit of
porting over. I used to have linfo for Mac, BSD and Linux. It becomes
pretty darn obvious that the shell code from one will not just work in
the other. Not by a country mile.

Even with straight BSD, it's still not identical. Apple has a small list
of their own commands they add to interact with hardware. Command syntax
differs. The file system is of course different so throw out anything to
do with the file system as that's not going to be compatible.

The two are different. That does not make one more of a problem than the
other.

> What you write in Linux won't just work in the Mac.

And vice versa. Sure. And if we are talking about the desktop then Linux is
the odd-man-out... so by your "logic" Linux is the problem.

In other words your blaming of the Mac was incorrect. OK.

Meaning those who write code to the LCD will have challenges. Sure.

Nope: <http://youtu.be/Qv8JqA0xkgo>

The Mac cli is as basic as it can get. Many options linux offers have no
effect.
But then, few Mac users venture outside their walled garden. It helps to
install "mc" though. At least a tiny little bit of the useability linux
offers comes to the Mac then, too.

If you think the Mac is limited why not show some tasks Linux handles
better. Here are a couple which others have brought to COLA recently which I
have talked about:

* Filling out a PDF form: <https://youtu.be/mqiaPeY1YaI>. Nobody can show
anything even close on Linux... and I left out how you can select a word or
phrase, say "Head of Household" and do a quick Google search and more.
Instead we saw Owl showing something which, while somewhat cool
(auto-filling such forms) is something few would care about (and it can be
done on the competition... even with the tools he used, I think).

* Setting up a mouse to do unusual things... this is something few would
want anyway, but the way it was done on Linux offered fewer choices and was
harder to set up. Here is how I do it: <https://youtu.be/V791-XhhOxY> (I
have shown an older tool in the past, worked much the same... macOS has
choice here). The fact I can have configurations set per program is a very
powerful tool... as far as I know there is no way to do it on Linux (though
I suspect Owl might be able to come up with one, which would be commendable,
there is no pre-made solution).

This works on FreeBSD:
$ CLICOLOR_FORCE=1 ls -alG |less -R
Might work on Mack.

It works, thanks!

That will work on the Mac.

Tested: works fine here. Thank you!
