Well I don't know about any other Linux advocates families, but my other
half uses Linux, in fact she uses Mandriva. She also has a Motorola
Android phone. :-)

   My other half was happily using Linux until she decided to get herself
an iPhone. For awhile she used Windows but couldn't tolerate it anymore 
after having managed to escape it for awhile. Fortunately for her I had
an old MythTV box lying around. 

   Although now that she's seen my Android, she is starting to contemplate
dumping the iPhone.

   Apple would force the issue even further if they thought they could get
away from it.

My wife uses Linux. Actually I should probably update it. I don't even
remember what version it is - OpenSUSE 9.2 I gather. Zero problems.

My kids use Windows because they play games and Wine is not good enough
- - Yet!

I use mainly Linux but I have Windows doing very important thing playing
Spotify...

My 76 year old mother uses Linux - I plan to update it...

I don't have very many friends but most of them uses Linux and Windows.

I advocate Linux, but I don't push it on what ever cost. I typically try
to find out first what person needs from his/her computer.

The first thing I usually ask is, "do you play games?" If they, yes, then 
I tell them they probably want to stay with Windows, or at least dual-
boot. The next question I ask is, "are you married to M$ Office." If yes, 
then basically the same answer, though I mention they could also run a 
virtual machine under Linux or, depending on their version of M$ Office, 
run it under Crossover or vanilla Wine. Otherwise, if they're like a lot 
of people who share pictures, "social network," browse the web and use 
email, there's absolutely no reason why Linux wouldn't do the job *better* 
without the malware crap involved with using Windows.
