Apparently not:
$ aptitude show jack
Package: jack
State: not installed
Version: 3.1.1+cvs20050801-26+b1
Priority: optional
Section: sound
Maintainer: Michael Banck <mbanck@debian.org>
Uncompressed Size: 618 k
Depends: python (< 2.7), python (>= 2.5), python-support (>= 0.90.0), libc6 (>=
2.2.5), libncursesw5 (>= 5.6+20071006-3), python-cddb, python-eyed3,
python-pyvorbis (>= 0.5) | python-mutagen, cdparanoia | cdda2wav,
vorbis-tools | flac
Description: Rip and encode CDs with one command
Jack has been developed with one main goal: making OGGs (or MP3s) without
having to worry. There is nearly no way that an incomplete rip goes unnoticed,
e.g. jack compares WAV and OGG file sizes when continuing from a previous run.
Jack also checks your HD space before doing anything (even keeps some MB free).
Jack is different from other such tools in a number of ways:
* it supports different rippers and encoders
* it is very configurable
* it doesn't need X
* it can "rip" virtual CD images like the ones created by cdrdao
* when using cdparanoia, cdparanoia's status information is displayed and
archived for all tracks, so you can see if something went wrong
* it uses sophisticated disk space management, i.e. it schedules its
ripping/encoding processes depending on available space.
* freedb query, file renaming and id3/ogg-tagging
* it can resume work after it has been interrupted. If all tracks have been
ripped, it doesn't even need the CD anymore, even if you want to do a freedb
query.
* it can do a freedb query based on OGGs alone, like if you don't remember from
which CD those OGGs came from.
* freedb submissions
What the good man needs is jackd:
$ aptitude show jackd
Package: jackd
State: not installed
Version: 5
Priority: optional
Section: sound
Maintainer: Debian Multimedia Maintainers <pkg-multimedia-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org>
Uncompressed Size: 32.8 k
Depends: jackd2 | jackd1
Description: JACK Audio Connection Kit (default server package)
JACK is a low-latency sound server, allowing multiple applications to connect
to one audio device, and to share audio between themselves.
This dummy package depends on the current default JACK implementation.
But even then, espeak shouldn't depend on jackd. It should run just
fine, even with the warnings DFS posted (I get the warnings too, but
the program executes just fine).

jackd is not installed on my machine. espeak doesn't need it.
On a sad note, after a few years of not doing squat with MIDI, I gave my
Yamaha touch-sensitive keyboard to a school.
If I do any audio work, it is going to have to be all computer-generated.

I had recently reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 (Wubi) and by default the sound was muted. Yep. Linux has a knack for wasting time. Whether it's arguing over how to pronounce Linux, if Linux is just the kernel, if it's gnu/linux and so forth. If they spend half as much time repairing their defective operating system as they do arguing over inconsequential things, it might be usable after 20 years. -- flatfish+++ Please visit our hall of Linux idiots. http://linuxidiots.blogspot.com/ Watching Linux Fail: http://limuxwatch.blogspot.com/ Desktop Linux: The Dream Is Dead "By the time Microsoft released the Windows 7 beta in January 2009, Linux had clearly lost its chance at desktop glory." http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/207999/desktop_linux_the_dream_is_dead.html

A couple of people discussing the usage of sudo? Is that the best you can come up with? Are these your 'pack of Linux idiots' giving us '10 different answers' about 'what it does and what permissions it gives' while they 'argue over it for days'? Your statement remains bullshit. -- It's a man's obligation to stick his boneration in a woman's separation; this sort of penetration will increase the population of the younger generation. ~ Eric Cartman

Of course not. For example, watch the pack of Linux idiots babbling in this thread: "It's technically Super User Do" "Sudo, you're root, you're just not root." "My theory: "su" stands for switch user. It makes you the other user temporarily" "It [su] was originally "substitute user"" http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=922632&highlight=sudo Ubuntu even had to include a special 'Misconceptions' section because the pack of babbling Linux idiots don't understand it. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo#Misconceptions And notice they had to disclaim and refuse support for using the -i and -s switches. Linux does not belong anywhere near end users.
