I knew that British books like Walter Scott's novels were eagerly awaited and a copy was hardly off the ship before they fired up the presses to pirate it but I was in a museum that delved into the other products that were copied. It wasn't too effective but Britain supported the south in the US civil war. The way the world was supposed to work is the US would grow cotton and Britain would turn it into value added manufactured goods and send it back. The northern US mills were raining on the parade. It was the same situation in India. One of the root causes of WWI was after Germany was unified they caught up rapidly with the Industrial Revolution and were a threat to the game plan. Even in WWII Morgenthau and others had plans to turn Germany into a deindustrialized potato farm.
