The macro recorder thing in OO/LO has never been that great.  I don't
use OO much.  I generally use sc or gnumeric for spreadsheets and
text editor + latex for pretty-print text stuff.  I do wish developers
in general would focus on core functionality perfection over UI changes.

You can also type the "=sum(...)" directly into the formula bar and use
the mouse to paint the range.  The macro recorder will correctly record
those actions.
