To be fair, had I been given the chance to avoid updating Android from
Kitkat to Lollipop on my Nexus 7, I absolutely would have done so.
Instead, it was basically unavoidable, and the upgrade has made a
formerly decent device into a dog-slow turd that's close to unusable.  I
imagine the developer team chuckling to themselves as they push it out:
"well, this ought to sell a whole bunch of new hardware!"  Apple is
little better: I once bought a new ipod that required a newer version of
itunes than was available for my mac desktop: in essence I was being
asked to buy a new desktop to support my new ipod.  I was not happy.

I agree with your position; just saying Microsoft isnt alone in pushing
out "new stuff" that makes a mess of your hardware.
