I use i2p a lot. There are many interesting services in it, including IRC
services, distributed email systems, torrenting and distributed file hosting.

The garlic routing model is better balanced than the onion model. In Tor,
there are few relays per user, while in i2p nearly everybody is a relay.
Bandwidth is not higher but it is better balanced.

The main problem with i2p is getting people to use it. For a i2p node to be
really good, it needs to keep a certain uptime (in order to achieve good
integration) and it needs to have the firewall configured. These two
factors are deal breakers for many average home users. You can get the node
working with low uptimes and all the firewall ports closed, but efficency
will be lower.

I2p is not new. It has been around for some time. If somebody is curious,
he should give it a try and ask around in the official IRC server inside
the i2p network, IRC2p.
