It went back to the shop--initial diagnoses "New disc failed".

Next diagnosis "MB failed".  They sold me a refurb slightly older, 
slightly slower, physically much larger "Inspiron 660".

I am back in-the-air with that machine (my disc or a replacement clone, 
my memory added).
