That's easy - subtract begin(0) which is the absolute offset of the 
start of the match.

>> "foo bar" =~ /ba(.)/
=> 4
>> $~.captures
=> ["r"]
>> $~.begin(1)
=> 6
>> $~.begin(1) - $~.begin(0)
=> 2
