Compile and match in two separate steps:
>>> import re
>>> r = re.compile('(?P<first>a?)(?P<second>b?)')
Find the groups' positions:
>>> r.groupindex
{'second': 2, 'first': 1}
Find the matching substrings:
>>> r.match("a").groupdict()
{'second': '', 'first': 'a'}
