It would be a huge help if you copy and paste the entire traceback:
everything that Python emits.

Does the given string always have particular characters listed? It
looks like you may be having some sort of character encoding issue;
\ufffd means U+FFFD, the "Replacement Character" used when something
can't be decoded correctly.
