Or, if you want to do it with itertools instead of the "re" module:

 >>> s = "pyyythhooonnn ---> ++++"
 >>> from itertools import groupby
 >>> [c*length for c, length in ((k, len(list(g))) for k, g in

['yyy', 'hh', 'ooo', 'nnn', '---', '++++']
