What about using an iterator?
def myiter(tar):
for t in tar:
print "extracting", t.name
yield t
sfo = sock.makefile('r')
taro = tarfile.open(fileobj=sfo,mode='r|')
taro.extractall(members=myiter(taro),path=edir)
