Use a raw string to prevent Python from interpreting a backslash as the start of an escape sequence >>> r"C:\Documents and Settings\smacdon\Desktop\09 Aggregate JWS" 'C:\\Documents and Settings\\smacdon\\Desktop\\09 Aggregate JWS' or use forward slashes as directory separators.
